I would read that thread first to get a brief understanding of how XWF and e-feds work.

My advice, although I'm not very active myself at the moment, would be to read and write as much as possible and get involved in story lines. That will help you improve your own writing, while also getting more involved in the crazy world of XWF. Being more active will get your character(s) more of a 'push' into bigger matches and developing story lines that play out in the results.
