Hanging out with the woman he was unwillingly paired with over the dating app was an odd experience for The Notorious One. Rachel Desmond certainly seemed a nice enough woman and she could easily outtalk even Ned’s long winded diatribes, but she was surprisingly calming to be around. She spoke her mind and seemed unafraid to be honest about her blunt opinions on matters, though most were trivial. After grabbing a coffee and a few talked, she insisted on getting a bagel sandwich from a specific shop they passed by. Finding the chance to get a little bit of space, Ned declined grabbing anything from the shop and instead looked for somewhere to sit outside the establishment. After some searching, Ned sat in a park bench, the other person on the seat sitting to the side, a large newspaper obscuring their face. In a single movement, the person sitting beside Kaye forcefully swung the newspaper down, nearly leaping to sit next to Ned.

“NED!”

“JESUS CHRIST!

The Notorious One flailed somewhat, leaning over the arm of the bench away from the person who leaped towards him on the bench. After a moment of inspection, he finally realized it was his psychiatrist Urias Pheelanruff in a disguise that honestly shouldn’t have fooled him one bit. The moment the immediate shock passed, it was followed by a more generalized frustration at Urias.

“I cannot believe you’re stalking me on a casual meetup with this girl, Doc.”

“Stalk is such a harsh word. Besides, I don’t find a darn thing wrong with me keeping an eye on my favorite client!”

“Sometimes, Urias, I think I’m your only client with how often you can pull this stuff off.”

“That might be truer than I’d like, but that’s no reason to say that kinda stuff, buddy! Besides, how’s your date? That’s the real reason I’ve been looking in anyways.”

With a large inhale, Ned began to gesture his hands, hoping it would somehow explain his perspective to the good doctor.

“I told you. It’s not a date. We met up, talked, and got some coffee and she is just grabbing a sandwich real quick. It’ll be over with in a bit anyway and then I can finally delete that dating profile you made for me.”

“Delete it? But I thought you were feeling kind of alone, Ned…”

With a shrug, Kaye rested his chin on his knuckles.

“I am, but… I don’t know about all this. Rachel’s a nice girl, seriously, but I don’t know if I’m in the same mindset as she is. She views this like you do, Doc.”

“Behind a newspaper?”

“Ye- no!”

“Through the store windows?”

“No!”

“Then how?”

“Like a date!”

Ned collapsed a bit in his seat, his head pointed upwards as he sighed.

“She has all these immediate wants and desires and expectations for a possible relationship and I just… I don’t even know if I’m ready to even look at something like this! Everybody tells me to be more emotionally open and available, but I haven’t committed to loving someone romantically in years and I just… I don’t know if I’m wrong and just holding onto something obsessively if the world is telling it’s time to move on. I keep wondering if there’s something wrong with me because I still don’t feel completely ready, but everyone seems to think I should be. I don’t know…”

Dr. Pheelanruff frowned, before giving Ned a reassuring nudge with his elbow.

“Look, bud, I didn’t mean to push you or nothin’. You just get really melancholy and I was just trying to help out. You can always stop if you need to. There’s no pressure.”

“There wouldn’t be, but now I’ve wrapped someone else, even tangentially into my own little messed up world. Speaking of which…”

Rachel approached the two, a bagel sandwich in hand. She took a large bite out of it before struggling out a few words.

“Yoo know thish, guy, Ned?”

“Yeah, yeah. He’s a… he’s my…”

Ned twirled his hands around uselessly in an attempt to somehow make the words come easier.

“My friend.”

“That’s cool! You still wanna come see my church?”

“Today? I don’t-”

“Oh, he can make it! He’d love to at least check it out!”

Urias gave Ned a big grin, obviously feeling as though he helped a bit.

“Really? You should totally attend the next service, too!”

“Yeah, I was thinking that me and my friend could actually attend!”

Pheelanruff’s face turned to a surprised frown.

“That’s even better! I’ll tell everyone you two are coming! Let me show you the building, it’s just down the street!”

The two get up to follow her, trailing far enough behind to share a few whispers.

“But, Ned, I already have a church!”

“Look, if I’m gonna have to attend a service, you bet your Freudian ass I’m not doing it alone. Besides, I don’t pay you to set me up on dates in the first place, so this is just deserts as far as I’m concerned.”

“We’re here!”

As the two looked up from their bickering to check the building, they saw a towering megachurch looming over them, casting a shadow far back behind them. But as Ned stared on, something seemed oddly familiar about it all. It was only once Pheelanruff spoke up that it clicked.

“Buddy, that’s the logo on your bootleg backpack…”

The two shared a glance and gulped in unison. They were gonna attend the hell out of some church.

The Emptiness We Leave Behind

Sat in front of a wall in The Notorious Gym, Ned Kaye holds his Hart Championship belt close to his chest as it lies draped over his shoulder. Despite the clear look of determination given by his demeanor and body language, he seems to stare off into space absentmindedly before ultimately focusing his gaze forward.

“Can you feel it?”

He runs a finger over the belt, trailing towards its center.

“The knowledge that on the first show of the new year, you two not only compete in the main event, but you have the chance for a tremendous upset. To set the tone for 2021 as your year. It’s exciting for me because it reminds me of that anticipatory sensation I would have when I was just a fan instead of a wrestler in this great company. A champion stands before two challengers with proven talent waiting for the opportunity to make history. To put their name amongst legends and accept one of the greatest prizes in this sport. That begs the question… If this champion is facing a worthy set of challengers, then how does he overcome them?”

“Well, to start, he should remind everyone why he has the belt at all. And the reason I’m the XWF’s proud Hart Champion is because of my ability to persist. 2020 might have left us on the calendar, but it doesn’t stop the struggles so many people are facing, nor the absolute stress and strain everyone has felt. But despite all of that, I show up. Not just to wrestle, but to win and to win damn well. Tommy Wish put up a damn good fight on the last show of 2020 and I had to dig deep to make sure he didn’t get that win over me. However, Tommy isn’t showing up at Warfare. He has more time to prepare and more time to rest between his matches than I do. The first person to pin Kenzi Grey on Anarchy was me and I didn’t have to sell out to another brand of the same old scourge we’ve seen in the XWF countless times now. First, it was BoB and Chaotic Inc and now it’s The Left Hand. You wanna know something? BoB and Chaotic Inc. haven’t bested me since my return and I’ve got zero plans to change that any time soon. Hell, I’m already prepared for when The Left Hand inevitably starts looking my way. What about you, Felix? Wizard? Are you prepared to fight tooth and nail to defend not only this belt around your waist, but the ideals that it represents? The ideals you have to stand for this belt to matter? Because if you think it’s that simple you are profoundly mistaken.”

“Wizard, I can’t believe I’m gonna say this, but I honestly feel pretty damn bad for you. You’ve got the will and the way, but you’ve chosen to play a part in someone else’s game. It’s not like you can’t see the strings. Hell, your allies can laugh about my haircut, which is damn good by the way, my music, my nickname, all of it. But it’s mine. I chose it; I fought for it; I stand by it, cheesy as it might be. You can’t even stand by your own plans for victory in the name of destiny or clairvoyance. Here’s something to keep in mind, Wiz: I was never the chosen one. Even standing amongst the combination of APEX and The Prophecy, two of the most respected factions in the business, I was still seen as all hype and no substance. I had to claw my way to success. Ignore the doubts of not only others, but myself. If you can’t do that, if you need the man pulling your strings to even make you feel like you can somewhat match me, then you were never going to win in the first place. You follow destiny’s call. I forge my own through sheer will.”

“Now, Felix, you’ve talked yourself up an awful lot for someone walking into a Hell in a Cell blind. It’s a nice change of pace, surely, over someone else with the ability to make it happen, but without the belief to see that they can. But you’ve got the opposite problem, Jones. You’ve convinced yourself I’m just like any other opponent. That all you gotta do is poke and prod at the right areas and you have me down for the count. That couldn’t be further from the truth. I’ve overcome a hell of a lot worse than you, Felix, and I’m gonna keep doing so consistently because it’s what I do. See, you think that I’m gonna rest on my laurels because I feel I’ve made it. Finally reached the top, so to speak. Again, not true. I didn’t come back here to hold a title for a little and feel like I was on top of the world, I came back because someone underestimated me and wanted to try and break me. He hurt my family. Emotionally. Physically. Mentally. But I didn’t break. I didn’t fall from grace. I came back to stop bastards like him from gaining any semblance of power in this company again and the final payment of that debt hasn’t yet been made. Do you really think that I would lose this belt to you when I still have to crush Chris Chaos and show him the mistake he’s made. Do you really think you can accomplish in one match what he couldn’t over months? If so, I admire your optimism, as misplaced it might be.”

“See, people talk about the heat of battle. The feeling of a harsh sweltering storm of fire that builds in someone as they fight their heart out. Hell in a Cell is perfect for that. There’s no running, no escape from the intense combat within. It is a place where the most fiery of hearts is the one that walks away least scathed. A test of not only skill, strength, and spirit, but of character. Felix believes the Hart title already belongs to him just because he doesn’t understand what he’s up against. The Wizard is too concerned with reading tea leaves than seeing why the water is boiling. Can you feel it? You both have a tremendous honor. The first Main Event of a new year and all you have to do to come out as a winner is withstand the flames. Can you? Bourbon couldn’t. Kenzi couldn’t. Wish couldn’t. Chaos won’t. Don’t be surprised when the heat becomes too much for you.”

“I never stopped burning. Not when covered in snow, ash, blood. As BoB and Chaotic Inc. squirm and deteriorate under the pressure of a federation that’s outgrowing them, I never broke. As The Left Hand rises, waiting to test exactly how much damage they can do as the XWF recovers, I still burn. You can hit me with everything up your sleeve and the fire never goes out. So, bring your best. Bring the kitchen sink, too, if you need it, but don’t expect anything more but steam.”

"You can't run from yourself."
