A Snitch

Shit it's cold tonight, Why am I even bothering. I shove my hands into my jacket pockets in an attempt to keep them warm. My head is down as I look at the pavement in front of me avoiding stepping in any dog shit, this road is known for its dog shit, it even has the name Dog Shit Ally. It was disgusting the amount of feces left stinking the street up, it doesn't help the amount of wild dogs you can find around this place, and not just the four-legged kind. Down each side street you can hear the dogs barking as they fight amongst themselves for the left over food that can be found in the knocked over trash cans, then on each street corner in this neighbourhood there is the other type of dog normally stood under a street light hoping to flag down some desperate, sex starved middle-aged man who would pay her a fortune for a night of passion and A probable S.T.I to follow.

A couple of hours earlier Chris had been sat in Halliday's bar having a drink with his friend contemplating what had gone wrong on the bank job. As some of you may remember from the previously told story, Halliday and Macbeth had put together a plan to steal a very valuable artifact from a bank vault. They had put together a team of friends that they thought capable of pull the job off and they would have except something happened. They were all attacked by some sort of group of mercenaries wearing comic book character masks. When all was said and done two of their team were dead and another was in jail. Timmy B despite getting caught had kept his mouth shut about the other members of the team apart from Stan who was found dead inside the vault. Timmy had told the court that it was only himself and Stan who had been part of the job and it was believed leaving Macbeth and Halliday free men.
Halliday had heard about a group of street kids who lived down by the docks who apparently know everything that is going on in the city, he thought maybe they would have information as to who this team of mercenary's were. If they can help at all it will stand Halliday and his family in good stead to start designing the plans for a revenge attack on the unknown group. That is why Macbeth finds himself now in this stinking part of town.

Fucking hell it's cold, it stinks, this is not what I needed tonight but I am almost there now, I can just get the info we need and then I can fuck off home again.

Chris had started on the drugs again after what had happened with the bank job, seeing some of his friend's die had effected him more than he thought it would. It was the youngster of the group Joe that effected him the most, he was just a kid and had come to Macbeth for a job. Macbeth thought long and hard about turning him down because the risks could be high but eventually gave in and brought him in as getaway driver, at least if anything went wrong he could just floor it and nobody would suspect him as being part of it. Chris though should have stuck with his gut instinct and turned Joe down as it was Macbeth who was first to make it back to the getaway car and find Joe's lifeless body slumped over the steering wheel, a thick gash in his throat.

Finally i'm here but where is this derelict warehouse. What had Halliday said, head to the right... Ok so this way and then around the back and the warehouse will be in front of you. Doesnt sound to difficult to find.

He slows his walk slightly and pulls a cigarette out of his pocket and lights it up. He turns the corner to head around the back of another much larger warehouse to the one he was supposed to be looking for. It was almost pitch black around this side of the docks but Macbeth could see the glow of a burning trash can up a head illuminating a small warehouse.

That must be the place. I put out my cigarette and make a b-line for the small shitty looking building, as I neared I began to hear the chatter of the street kids inside, probably showing of what they had stolen from unsuspecting victims as the walked too and from work on the busy streets. I stopped next to the burning trash can and warmed my hands for a few seconds before slowly opening the door and taking a peek inside.

There must have been a dozen kinds inside, boys and girls ages from what looks like twelve to around seventeen or eighteen. They were chatting among themselves and didn't notice Chris enter the warehouse until he accidentally bumped into a shopping trolley causing it roll across the room and crash into a pile of glass bottles causing them to crash and smash to the ground. The kids all quickly turn to face him jumping to their feet ready to defend themselves. Chris holds his hands up in a gesture of peace, he wasnt here to hurt the kids and wanted them to know that, he wanted them to trust him. It was going to be a difficult job though, normally when someone comes down here that isn't a street kid he is looking to do something bad to them, that's how their minds worked anyway and that is why they were being so defensive, whether it is pimps who would come down here grab the girls and take them away forcing them to work for him or gangs during the initiation of a new member would force the new member to kill one of the street kids to prove the loyalty or they wouldn't be initiated to the gang and would probably be killed as well.

Chris: "Kids, im not here to hurt you."

The kids noticeably relax and a couple of the older ones even take a step closer.

Kid #1 "What you doing here then mister?"

Chris: "I am here hoping you have some information for me. I presume you heard about what went down at the city bank last week?"

Kid #1: "What's it to you?"

Chris takes a seat on a crate in a hope it would make the situation a little less tense as the kids were obviously still feeling uneasy with this obviously wealthy guy who has come into their home.

Chris: " It's isn't important.

Kid #2: " Well maybe it's not important what we know."

Macbeth smiles at the cockiness of the young street urchin but he could see he was going to have to play the game, the kids, the homeless but they are obviously not stupid.

Chris: "Let me just say that some friends of mine were hurt and I want to know who was responsible."

Chris was taken aback by what was said next.

Kid #1:" I thought you would know that, you are that Halliday guys friend aren't you.

Kid #2: "Yeah, i heard you were there. We heard you were killed."

Chris: "Well you do seem to know a lot but apparently not everything. What do you know about the other team, the masked guys who fucked it up?

The kids whispered between each other as Chris waited for a response. As he waited he looked around the room he could see in his peripherals another kid leaning up against the wall to the side of him and a couple more younger ones who were sat playing noughts and crosses with chalk on the floor. eventually the kids stop whispering and turn back to Chris.

Kid #1: "They knew about your job all along, they new from the start."

Chris: "Who did? Who are they."

Kid #1: "We don't know their names."

Chris can't hide his disappointment as he puts his head in his hands for a second.

Kid #1: " I know where they hangout though."

A smile forms on Chris face as he looks back towards the kids.

Chris: "Tell me, where?"

The kids look at each other for a brief moment then point out of the broken window towards the large warehouse Chris had walked past not twenty minutes earlier.

Chris: "In their?"

Kid #1: "Yeah, they spend most evenings in their, we sneak in through that window over their sometime and listen to them making there plans. That's how we knew what they were going to do to you and your team."

Kid #2: "Yeah, i was in there when the man walked in and told them of your plan.

Chris: "What man?"

Kid #1: " I don't know, I think they called him Jim."

Kid #2: "No it wasn't. They called him little something... ummm Little Jimmy I think.

Kid #1: "Yeah that's what I said, Jim.

Chris had felt like he had been shot in the gut as he fumbled for his phone and opened up his social media page.

Chris: " Was this the guy?"

Chris shows the kids a picture.

Kid# 1: "Yeah, that's him, hey you know him?"

Anger was beginning to fill up inside of Chris as he realizes that Little Jimmy, Halliday's nephew was a snitch and the reason Timmy is in Jail, Stan and Jimmy's own best friend are dead. Putting his phone in his pocket Chris gets back to his feet saying thanks to the kids before turning to walk out the door. Before he does though he turns to the kid who was leaning up against the wall to his side and reaches out his hand.

Chris: "Give it back!"

The kid smiles then steps forward handing Chris' wallet back to him, despite the revelation he had just heard Chris contemplated taking this kid back with him, he could use the kids skills. Instead though he just turned and walked out of the building and sticking to the shadows to avoid any contact with the guys that had caused this trip down to the docks, at least until he could gather his thoughts and inform Halliday or the information that had come to light.
