After a long layoff from competition, the Hit Girls have returned with a mix of new and old competitors, all striving for a chance to call themselves the best the gridiron has ever seen.

EPISODE 2: EVERYONE IS WATCHING

The Hit Girls last season was their absolute best, due in no small part to the powerful running of their number one draft pick, Amira Kassouri. Cincy had lobbied hard to get Amira to join a team that had never come close to being a contender. In the end, it took a lot of incentives and promises of huge endorsements, but Amira became a Hit Girl and she proved herself to be worth every penny. With a new season comes big changes, none so big as the addition of Maria Salvatore-Spencer as the featured running back. With this change comes even bigger problems for the Hit Girls and their Head Coach.

Coach Maleek Raheem addresses the media following The Hit Girl's 9 to 3 home win over The Rampage.

ESPN L: Coach, congratulations on the win. It was a tight one. What are your thoughts?

Coach Raheem: Anytime you can win in front of your hometown fans, it’s an honor. They are the reason we exist, so we are happy to be able to pay that good will back. That being said, we have a lot to work on. Anytime you go out there and fail to reach the endzone, you can expect a losing effort. Fortunately, the defense came up big and I attribute that to our Defensive Team Captain, Ashley Marie Chase. I hope to see a lot more of that in the future from her.

SPORTS TEAM 7: Can you break down the failure of the offense to score?

Coach Raheem: There were a variety of factors, but those are things that we have to work on in practice. I am not going to get into the habit of coaching my ladies in public. They all came out to fight and win and they did that as a team, even when one half of the machine was struggling. It’s a team sport and that was a team victory.

CINCY TIMES: Can you talk about some of the key plays that got the team the win?

Coach Raheem: First and foremost, a special shout out to Honey Sunshine. She was named the Offensive Player of the game after posting all of our points and pinning the Rampage deep on 4 occasions. This is her rookie season as a kicker/punter and she is already playing at a high level.

There was also exceptional play from Angela Vaughn. She made a key interception that helped to keep Detroit out of the endzone. That was a heads up play and you can coach until you are blue in the face, but top tier players execute when called on, and you can’t coach innate awareness.

Big time players make big time plays in big time moments. Coda isn’t the biggest player on the team, but she plays like she is. She fought through the line and got after Crystal and put her down in the back field in a critical moment in the game. She never stops fighting.

THE HOLLYWOOD DISH: Coach, you use to have a very serious relationship with Crystal. Did you catch any flack from Maria after that social media post you made about her?

Coach Raheem: OKAY! That is going to do it for today folks! We are going to take this win and savor it, but the hard work only gets harder from here. There were a lot of other LFL teams who also won and in much more convincing fashion. If we are going to keep pace, we have set our sights higher and that means we go right back to the training facility and we keep pushing to do even better. Thank you.
