ZERO DARK THIRTY

The scene fades from a black screen to the view of a chest mounted camera. The time stamp in the bottom right hand corner of the screen says, 11-14-2011 14:27. The surroundings are evident, as the glare from the sun shines brightly off the desert sand. The carrier of the camera is breathing heavily and you can see military soldiers in front of him that are running in the same direction. In the back ground mortar fire is heard. The big blasts of the artillery echo off the canyons in the distance. The heart rate of the cameraman increases with every step. AK-47s are heard as they fire off in three round bursts. One of the men in front of the cameraman is hit by that fire. As the soldier falls to the ground, the camera man stops and runs to him. He bends down to check on the vitals of the fallen. The man seems to still be alive but isn't showing any signs of consciousness. The camera man turns his head towards the pack ahead of them. Four more brave warriors are running back to where the victim had hit the sands. They all work together to pick up his motionless body and begin carrying him as they begin running again. After running for what seemed hours, they make it a three quarter ton truck and climb into the back of it. The driver of the vehicle takes off towards the base. The camera man is sitting in the back with the head of the fallen soldier on his lap as others are working on him. The cameras view is of the back of the vehicle. The canvas top is flapping in the wind, as a soldier gets curious. The camera watches the young man move the canvas to the right aside. He can be seen peering out behind the truck. The AK-47 fire is still heard heavily but isn't as loud as it had been before. The interested soldier turns and looks at his fellow Marines. He looks back outside the vehicle and immediately grabs his right shoulder hitting the bed of the truck. Men are yelling and going to his aid. The camera slowly fades to black as you hear the muffled voices of the soldiers.

The screen fades from the ominous black to the view from a handheld camera of a soldier. The time stamp states 11-02-2011 21:32. It is in the middle of the night in the Iraqi desert and the holder of the camera is obviously treading in some body of water. There is screaming from all the around from other soldiers. As the night vision focuses you can see a M1A1 Abrams tank submerging into the water. The shouts from around are all concerned and in worry as there are soldiers still inside the tank. The tank is on his side and its tracks are stuck deep into the waters floor. Marines continue to attempt to get their brothers out of the tank before it is completely logged with water, drowning the men inside. Each try proves to be a failure as there is no way to get inside the tank except for the door on top. The latch is on the inside and the only soldier that isn't knocked out inside the tank can't get the latch to move. All hope has seemed to be lost. The men are tiring from attempt to budge the massive metal door. A Marine is seen from the left side of the camera rushing into the water and swimming over to the tank. He arrives at the tanks location and grabs the metal door from the opposite side of the hinges. The man is screaming as he pulls on the door. After three failed attempts, he places his feet against the tanks roof. He pushes with his legs and pulls with his arms yelling loudly. The sound of metal breaking is heard echoing inside the tank as the latch breaks. The men pull open the door and go inside the tank to rescue the soldiers from the potential watery grave. The soldier that opened the door swims out of the water and to the shore walking away from the scene. The Marine holding the camera is in awe and can't believe what just happened. He turns the camera to his own face before saying " Holy shit, did that just happen!? " The screen fades to black slowly as the relief of the saved soldiers are heard through the audio.

A view of a helmet mounted Go Pro cameras point of view comes onto the screen from the recent dark. The time stamp has 10-31-2011 0948. Its mid-morning at Combat Outpost Gator, stationed in Baghdad. An army convoy was stopped during patrol earlier that morning and a search and seizure mission has been initialized for the Recon operatives. They set out towards the area the convoy was last spotted per the GPS. Some the vehicles are still there but a few of them are no longer. Stolen maybe? Hijacked is the more likely the answer. As they get closer to the site they jump from the humvee. Most of the Recon Marines are front of the soldier with the camera mounted to his helmet. They circle to the outside of where the vehicles are stranded on the sand covered road. One of the soldiers stops and stares at the ridge of the mountain. The camera turns towards where he is looking and a glare is seen. "SNIPER! GET DOWN!" All the men hit the sand and are crawling for cover against the vehicles. A shot is fired from the ridge location as a tire on one of the three quarter ton trucks is immediately flattened. The fire continues, one fifty caliber bullet at a time. The sounds of the slugs hitting the walls of the vehicles make the man wince with each hardened blow. A soldier stands up and props his M16A4 rifle against the hood of a humvee. Another shot goes off from the ridge. It whizzes by the Marines head at 1100 feet per second. Faster than the speed of sound, these slugs are ripping through the air towards this, all but sane, soldier who is lining the iron sights of his USMC issued rifle towards the hills. Confusion is heard among the men laying on the ground, as they can't figure out what would possess this man to risk his life like this. His chances of hitting the target of that distance were slim and none, and Slim, his ass left Baghdad last week. One of the Marines gets on the radio and is contacting COP Gator for some back up, explaining the location of the sniper and the chances of them making it back alive. Before Gator can respond a single shot is heard again. But this time it is from the rifle five feet from the radio. The soldiers stand silent. "Did he get him?" Two of the Marines head towards the mountain. The next radio traffic is from one of the men that went up to the ridge. "We got a believer." The sniper was vanquished. The radio man at the convoy position contacts Combat Outpost again."Disregard all previous traffic, sniper is down." The radio operator at the camp hands his base receiver to the lieutenant. "Corporal Davis, this is Lieutenant Rogers, your last traffic stated the sniper was down?" Davis laughed,"Ten four sir. This Devil Dog made a believer out of him." The camera slowly fades to black as laughter commences among the men.

There are only two kinds of people that understand Marines: Marines and the enemy. Everyone else has a second-hand opinion.-Gen. William Thornson, U.S. Army

Freedom is not free, but the U.S. Marine Corps will pay most of your share. -Ned Dolan

Hell, these are Marines. Men like them held Guadalcanal and took Iwo Jima. Bagdad ain't shit.-Marine Major General John F. Kelly

The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps! - Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the United States, 1945
