In the dark of the woods, Mystica trampled across the darkened fields, relishing the feeling of being free from sharing a body. Whether this was all a delusion was honestly as lost to him as it was to David. But for now, he dared not think about it. He just wanted to enjoy a body of his own, even if it was an illusion. This was home to him: wandering in the dark, searching for a light. Searching for answers to an unknown question. Where had everything gone?
As far back as he could recall, everything was black. There were certain aspects of his life he could recall, but again, there were patches of nothing at all, as if his brain were a sheet of paper and certain algorithms had been erased, leaving only gray smudges of what used to be life. There were things that needed to be known, but to both David and Mystica, those things had been lost to time. Perhaps not time, even. There was a distinct feeling of loss, as though the memories had been stolen by an external entity.
As he trudged along the path, Mystica began to notice a small hill range coming up to his left, slowly overcoming the trees. It was pure rock; a gray structure of cave openings that slowly blended into the dark sky, as though it stretched upward forever. The path continued haphazardly into the woods until it suddenly and violently zig-zagged into the opening of a monstrous cavern in the rock hills, like a huge, gaping maw, swallowing the dirt path whole. Mystica approached cautiously, listening for any sign of life. He knew these woods were the domicile of creatures unknown -- perhaps things that used to be men. He could hear the crash of rain through the leaves. The silent voices of ghosts in the rock.
With a deep breath, he stepped forward into the dark mouth of the cave, leaving nature behind him. For a few moments, he wandered about the entrance to the cave, mumbling odd things to himself, mostly curses toward his lighter counterpart, David.
"Bloody useless loverboy," Mystica grumbled, trying to shiver away the cold of the rain that had soaked into his dark jacket. "Go on, pick her some flowers! Stupid little--"
His rant was suddenly caught short by his stumbling over something at his feet. Catching himself on a rock before he fell, Mystica glanced down to see a lantern and book of strike-anywhere matches at his feet.
"Odd," Mystica pondered aloud, wondering for a moment why these items would be here. Unless...someone had put them there. Waiting for him.
Taking up the lantern in one hand, he quickly opened the box of matches and placed one between his teeth, lighting it in one quick pull. Placing the match to the lantern, the cavern erupted in a bath of light, and Mystica was simultaneously fascinated and horrified by what he saw.
It was a cacophony of insane ramblings scribbled on the wall in many different colours of chalk. It was utterly overwhelming at how much was written on the walls. Some thoughts overlapped one another, and as Mystica began to read them, it became apparent these ramblings were not just about one subject.
"It's a lexicon," he muttered to himself, studying the scrambled thoughts carefully, looking for any mention of himself or David.
Outside, a flash of lightning lit up the sky. A pound of thunder rocked the innards of the cave; the sound echoed off the walls, creating a sort of feedback within the rock walls. The bouncing from wall to wall amplified the sound, turning the clap of thunder into a menacing growl. Even the monster himself was shaken by the atmosphere, and had to steps back from the scribbled wall for a moment.
"Jesus," he muttered, rubbing the sweat from his forehead. "What a shitstorm."
He glanced out into the light of day. Outside, rain poured down in a torrent. The storm had started up again. Resigning himself to the idea he would be here a while, Mystica carefully balanced the lantern on a rock and took a seat next to it. He sighed aloud and looked to the walls. He could see a number of names. James, Kerri, Lanegan, Oliver...
His head began to spin, trying to take in all the information. As he began to think this trip was all for naught, he spotted it.
"David Martin," he said aloud, scrambling from his rock seat and toward the wall, already scanning the information around the name. Who in the world had written all of this here? For what purpose? Why so many names? So many souls.
As he read, a horrific grin began to spread across his face. He began to chuckle to himself, steadily becoming more mad in tone.
"Ah, it all makes sense now..."
