Accra, Ghana
WITH a weary sigh, Kieran lifted his head from the pillow. It crunched a little as his skin peeled off it.
Blinking the world into focus as best he could, he quickly scanned the room and found the cause of his awakening. Cutting like a knife through the room's makeshift blinds, a blade of light attacked Kieran's face. He did his best to fend it off, but his raised hand was a poor defence. The light forked around it and forced him to meet the day.
He groaned as he threw the solitary sheet from his body.
The hot, damp air joined the morning light in its assault of Kieran's body, and small beads of sweat began joining together in a trickle down his spine. It pooled a little at the base. The top of his waistband bore the evidence.
The city wasn't exactly quiet, but Kieran had lived enough of a life to easily block out whatever lay beyond the four walls beyond him. Rustling and rattling within the hotel was a different story.
He had seemingly one of the only two-room suites left in the city at late notice. Or at least one that wasn’t in a flea-ridden shithole. Admittedly, he thought that the rundown parts of town were where more of the fun would be, but given his reason for being here, he figured that he should probably make sure he had a 'safe' place to at least sleep - even if he still ventures into those corners when the whimsy strikes. The hotel required an extended booking, which led him to arrive in Ghana several days before the rest of the contingent for XWF Madness. That left him with plenty of idle time to get up to mischief in.
Ten in the morning wasn't the right time for mischief though. It was the time for coffee.
Coffee doesn't bang on the table.
He turned the door handle.
"Shit!" A woman exclaimed, throwing whatever she had in her hands onto the small dining table. She darted for the exit. Before Kieran could even mutter a word, she slipped out and fled the scene.
"Shit," he mimed, lacking the enegy to pursue her. He then spied what she had been rifling through.
Kieran picked up his wallet and checked its contents. All the cash was gone. Fortunately, it appeared that he may have interrupted the woman before she could clean him out completely. His cards (or at least the important ones) were still there. He breathed a sigh of relief.
Folding the wallet up and letting it fall back to the table - hitting with a haphazard slap - Kieran turned his attention to the rest of the room. It seemed like every single drawer in the place had been opened in the woman's burglary. He thought it weird that she would go to the wallet last, but maybe he had left that in the bedroom so it was a more onerous task for her. He couldn't really remember where he put it when he came in the door. He couldn't even remember coming in the door, period.
Kieran placed his hands on his hips, and let a little hiss seep out between lips pressed tight upon one another.
"Fucking hookers…"
