The camera shows a young overweight man with a full beard and combed over hair holding a microphone.
"Hello X dubya F fans!" The man says through a thick southern accent, "My name is Jimmy Texas and I am a talent recruiter for the federation. Just recently myself and cameraman Chris Whittaker did a short filming piece on Shove It's latest addition, Miss Kate Astrofey. Our story piece was cut short by unplanned developments at Kate's then home. But Kate's caretaker Nurse Browne offered to me a copy of the monitor footage that occurred after our cameraman left
what it depicts is a conversation between Kate and her nurse caretaker about Kate's history and some insight into Kate's personality as well as some insight into the character of Kate's new manager, Nurse Browne."
"I found the discussion to be fascinating, even though it tends to tred on some deep philosophical topics. I hope you all enjoy this insight into the X dubya F's latest addition."
"Roll the footage, please."
----
The camera view is from a high angle in the corner of the room Sitting on a rugged unmade bed is Kate Astrofey. Sitting across from her is Nurse Christine Browne. The Nurse's back faces the camera and her face is not visible. From the rear view the viewer can see her neatly straight black hair that ends at about chin level. On top of her head is a vintage nurse's cap. Her white uniform is pristine and perfectly ironed and pressed. Kate on the other hand appears haggard and distressed. Her stock t-shirt is ripped in several places and stitched in several other places. She wears black loose pants of the same haggard description. Kate's legs are crossed as she sits on the edge of the bed.
Nurse Browne retrieves a pack of cigarettes from her uniform pocket and lights one for herself. She hans the other to Kate who accepts.
Kate says while holding the unlit cigarette in between her two fingers, "I thought we weren't allowed to smoke indoors."
The Nurse replies while exhaling a cloud of smoke, "We're not. But no one will know. I promise. She offers the lighter to Kate who accepts and lights her own cigarette.
The Nurse quietly muses to herself, "So real. Even the Nicotine rush. I still can't wrap my head around it, it's like this place is a miniature world within the greater world. Yet just as real as the bigger one right down to the smallest detail."
Kate interrupts the introspective musings of the Nurse, "Would you quit it! You're starting to freak me out. You've been rambling about the world this and so real that since you came back in here. Cut the Bullshit Christine, get to the point."
"Very well, Kate." The Nurse ashes her cigarette on the ground and raises her hand to quite Kate before she can protest. "I'll take care of it. It will be like it was never there."
"Anyway, down to Brass tacks as they say, do they say that here? Nevermind. You're going to have an incredibly difficult time believing this, but it is important that you just trust me. As the religions say, have faith. It will be much better if you work with me here and trust me when I explain this to you. I promise it will work out really good for you and you will be happy with your life after all this difficulty and pain. All it takes is just an ounce of trust."
"Okay, Okay, I trust you. Get on with it, what are you up to? What's going on?"
Nurse Browne takes a long drag from her cigarette and exhales smoke as she speaks, "What if I told you your whole life was orchestrated by an overseer of sorts. Like someone who has been scripting your whole life from birth to your eventual death.
"Why are you saying 'What if you told me'? Is this what you ARE telling me?"
"It's a turn of phrase used to convey information not typically believable. It's from the Matrix. Did you guys get that movie here? And yes, what I'm telling you is true. There is an overseer to your life, but only specific to your life. She has been watching you since your birth and carefully scripting your life since that moment of your birth in San Francisco General. Your Mother's death to Cancer when you were five, your father's ensuing alcoholism. His raising you to be the man he couldn't have. Even when Koichi The Hawk Tsushima found you in the Tokyo amateur circuit and trained you for higher levels of Professional Wrestling. It was all scripted, you were always meant for these things, someone has been effectively writing your life."
"You're joking." Kate says with a look of incredulity
"Search your feelings, you know it to be true." the Nurse said as she ashed her cigarette on the floor once again. "That's another turn of phrase, I tend to have a penchant for them.
"Okay, let me try." Kate says with a giddy expression. "What if I told you, that you are the nurse I have always known since I came to this shithole hospital. And what if I told you that you've finally cracked under the pressure of working around all these psychopaths since you got out of school. Finally one day when you were changing Wet Billy's piss soaked sheets for the millionth time. Your brain just unhinged itself and you became one of the crazies just like me!"
Kate pauses as she looks confused for a moment. "Wait. Who the hell is Wet Billy? Why did I say that.?"
The Nurse nods her head. "Wet Billy is Billy Buchanan. He pees the bed nightly. The nurses call him Wet Billy. And you know this because I wrote it so that you would say it even though you shouldn't rationally know this information. And to answer your next demand, yes I will do a trick to provethat I am the overseer of your life. But only one trick. And just once."
Nurse Browne stubbs her cigarette out on the arm of the chair. It bends and breaks in the middle and when it is fully extinguished she shows it to Kate to observe.
"Now wait and watch"
Then as if by magic or some unseen strings, the cigarette straightens itself out and and reignites. Nurse Browne takes a satisfactory drag and exhales slowly.
Kate replies with astonishment in her voice. "That was amazing! How'd you do it? Show me one more time."
"No. I said only once. I'm not a carnival show, I'm here to help you not entertain you." the Nurse replies. "You're right about the moment of changing Wet Billy's sheets being my moment of change. That was when my consciousness as the overseer began to download into Nurse Browne's brain. She experienced severe headaches of sting sharp pain, but they would only last a minute or two as my consciousness began to replace areas of hers."
"So uh." Kate searches for the right words, "Uh you're not Christine Browne?"
"No, I am not." The Nurse replies. "I am inhabiting her body as a vessel because her face is familiar to you and I wasn't entirely sure this would work if I appeared in your world as a representation of my true body, I would most likely be kicked out of the hospital if I strolled in unannounced and you most likely wouldn't have listened to a word I said if I walked in out of the blue."
"Well couldn't you just appear in here and make me listen?" Kate asks.
"Yes. I could do that, but it's not particularly effective. And I have to operate by certain rules here. I'm only the scripter of YOUR life. I'm not a god that can do whatever she pleases. Well I guess I could, but I need to talk about it with the powers that be before I do it."
"So let me ask you something..." Kate says as her face furrows into a frown. "You made my mom die?!! How could you?!"Kate stands up with her Butterfly knife opened to show the blade. She appears on the Brink of a violent outburst.
"I'm so sorry Kate, but it had to happen. Now please sit down." The Nurse replies with calm and no concern that Kate is non-verbally threatening her.
Kate sits down and closes her Butterfly Knife with a look of confusion on her face. Then strangely she smiles and looks to the ceiling of the room and looks back at the nurse."
"Please tell me why."Kate pleads to the Nurse.
"It was all necessary for you to become the person you are today. Lives are a journey of difficulties and hardship, there's no way around it. I've tried. No one can be truly happy without enduring serious difficulty and tragedy."
"But I'm not happy!" Kate yells in a crescendo. "I hate my life and I hate who I am!"
"It's going to get so much better for you, Kate. I am always directing your life towards happiness for you. Your happiness is paramount for me." I've never had anything but your best interest and happiness in mind when I've designed your life. Tell me what do you think you need right now to be truly happy?"
Kate looks contemplative as she stutters out words. "I don't.. know. Freedom for sure. I can't be happy in this hospital. Then I guess I would need to be able to be financially stable. I would need to work a job that I believe in and enjoy."
"I can give you these things and very soon. You're going to be wrestling again soon in the XWF. You enjoy that don't you? It will pay a decent amount for you to be self-sufficient. All of your life, Kate has been building up to this moment where you emerge in the XWF as a top competitor. Your happiness is so close Kate! And I will be there in this body to experience it with you and make sure it lasts. When you know for sure that you want or need something I will make it happen. I love you Kate. More than you can possibly know. Trust me, I'll guide you."
"I don't know if I trust you. Most of my brain is telling me that you've finally lost your mind. But my heart tells me that this is true and I am in a room with my creator. If you are telling the truth and if you can deliver on your promises, then I don't see how things could go badly."
The Nurse nods her head and stomps her cigarette out on the floor. "You won't regret this Kate. I promise happiness is at hand for you. I'll be with you as long as you need me. You control when I come or go. Just say the word and I will disappear from your life forever. But since you seem to have come around to the truth, I think you'll find that I can help you very much."
Nurse Browne stands to leave the room but Kate stops her.
"What about all these ashes? you said you'd take care of it, so you need to clean them up!"
"I'll do you one better, Kate."
The Nurse walks to the window and inspects the weather outside.
"Yes." The Nurse says, "Just as expected. the pressure outside has dropped below that of the building."
The nurse opens the window a crack and a torrent of wind enters the room. The pressure change causes the ashes and residual smoke to rush out of the room. After less than a minute the room is totally clean.
"There, first promise met. Though I think i might have caused a tornado. I'm not entirely sure. We'll see. If there is a Tornado, listen to the nurses and evacuate your room. It's for your own safety Kate. Promise me you will."
"I promise." Kate replies with a faint stricken look on her face.
"excellent dear! I'm going to be leaving this body for a short period of time, so Nurse Browne won't recall any of this conversation. If you need to speak to me, just do so in your mind and I will answer in your heart."
Kate appears stoney faced.
"Kate, dear, there is nothing to be afraid of." The Nurse says without prompting, "I swear to you, you are precious to me. Nothing bad will happen to you from here on. It's going to be good times for you very soon. Simply be yourself, act rationally and trust yourself. I'll be with you always."
With that said the nurse exits the room and the picture focuses on Kate as she continues to sit on her bed with her head bowed and contemplation on her face.
The screen flickers and a black screen appears with a logo that reads: Property of the Erie County State Psychiatric Hospital on loan to XWF.
