A dirty, damaged package was received by XWF officials this afternoon. There were bloody handprints all over it, and it did not come through the mail. The first guy working in the office that noticed it notified his supervisor and before too long, the police were on the scene treating it like a bomb-scare.
The building was evacuated and after hours upon hours, the box was finally deemed safe. It was opened to reveal a dead snake and a VHS tape. ‘SEBASTIAN DUKE’ was dug into the plastic, possibly by a rock.
The police decided to hand it over to the XWF officials. There was an old VHS player stashed away in an old, unused back office that was brought into the central meeting room. A few members of the staff huddled in to watch.
The tape was pushed in, the play button was pressed, and after a few moments…
Static.
There was nothing on the tape, it seemed. They were moments from turning it off when it was heard.
A woman. Sobbing. The static faded and she was sitting next to a tree, begging someone to not harm ‘her’. It was the same video that aired the night Elisha made himself known. The night he aided Eli James IV and Mystica in sacrificing Neo-Nero.
The tape went dead for again for just a moment. When it came back to life…One person was seen. It was ‘her'.
Lacey Witasick. Staring directly into the camera, in the middle of the woods.
Lacey: My name…My name is Lacey Rex. My daddy never had no mommy or daddy. My daddy, he didn’t have nobody that cared about him. That’s not a way for a kid to grow up, and that’s why he found me. Daddy took me into his home when nobody else wanted me and he cared for me. He kept me safe. He told me things, too. Things he didn’t tell nobody else. Not even Uncle Sal.
He told me about Mr. Duke. When daddy had me come on TV with him the first night, my fake daddy was trying to make him fight you, because you were both against him. He was afraid of you two. My daddy knew it was a trick, and…he used me.
He gave me a home, but daddy wasn’t real nice at first. He didn’t talk to me. Daddy didn’t play with me. He just left me alone. For a long time, it didn’t feel like I had a daddy still.
But I watched daddy. I learned. I asked him to cut my hair like his, so I could be more like him. So I could make daddy love me. I don’t know if he did or not. It don’t matter no more.
Daddy’s dead. Mr. Eli killed him. I don’t know why, but I know that I gots something else now. Daddy taught me you can’t change things that’s happened, but you can do new things and make better things.
Daddy died, but Elisha was born. He didn’t have no mommy or daddy either. But he gots me. I’m Elisha’s mommy. I take care of Elisha.
Mr. Duke, why did you leave us? I know my daddy was helping you even if nobody said nothin’. I knew he was. He told me so. When they beat him up, you didn’t help him. I’m happy to have my baby boy, Elisha…But…
Lacey’s eyes narrow in that way children’s eyes do when they’re angry. That exaggerated, furrowed brow.
Lacey: You gots to pay for leaving him.
The camera pans back and it can be seen that Lacey has been sitting on the grass, with Elisha’s head in her lap. She’s gently petting his head…his mask with fingers that have been marked with mud or blood. Possibly both. It gives the impression as if she’s got a doll and is playing house. Still, the look in her eyes is an unnerving one.
Lacey: Elisha, don’t you think you should say something?
Elisha grumbles and closes his eyes.
Lacey: Come on, Elisha. Say something to them.
She pushes his head and strains to make him sit up. The bit of his chin showing from the bottom of his mask appears to be stained with blood. It looks like it’s been weeks since he’s bathed. It probably has been.
Elisha: huuuuuuuuuuhhhhhh…
His head twitches.
Elisha: The…the first thing…The first thing I remem…RAH…nananananaRAH…I remember a butterfly…
He rocks back and forth, pulling at his mask. He has pained expression on his face.
Elisha: haaaaaaaa…tearitofftearitofftearitoff…THIS IS MY FACE…hehn…RAH…Butterfly was…It was hurt…On the ground…heh…heh heh…HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! It was hurt on the ground AND IT PINNED IT’S WING RAH! I watched it…ummm…flyawayflyawayflyaway…IT CAN’T HA! I saw it…It saw me…It watched mmmmmmeeeeeee for TWO DAYS! TWO DAYS! It begged me to free it. IT WANTED ME TO KILL IT…unnn…hunnn rohroh RAH! It wanted me to but I...It fought. It tried to flap with the other wing. heh heh heh…I PINNED IT TOO! ‘HELP ME!’ ihearditcryihearditcryrrrrrrRAH! goupthoubaldheadHA! WHO LAUGHS NOW? WHO LAUGHS!?
Lacey holds his hand.
Elisha: Rain came…RAIN CAME AND…it drowned him...That…THAT…that’s how I was born.
Lacey leans over and hugs him.
Lacey: Mommy’s hungry. Go get some food?
Elisha leaps up and darts into the woods. Moments later, he returns with a freshly killed groundhog that has been torn open on its underside. He hands it to Lacey who takes a sickening bite. The blood and bile runs down her chin, and she smiles. Everyone in the XWF office gets sick. One woman faints. Lacey takes another bite and begins to chew. She hands it to Elisha who takes a bite as well. The tape cuts off and everyone quietly leaves the room after several moments of silence.
The thing is, while that may be the first memory Elisha has, of torturing a butterfly to death, it’s not the first thing that happened after Eric Rex was sacrificed to The Congregation.
Elisha woke up in a cave in the middle of the woods with no sign of humanity left to him. He had observed the animals and was actually mimicking their walk, scurrying around the woods on his hands and feet. He found Eli’s camp, but was careful to not get too close to the people. He snuck near the cabins late at night and listened to them talk to each other at dinner. He heard them reading to their children. And he began to quickly relearn his language.
He felt a closeness to the people there, and was weary of joining them. So he began to do what any animal would do. He began bringing them food. Rats, snakes, squirrels…All sorts of things, just to show that he was friendly. They became afraid.
Elisha was a monster.
But Lacey found him. Lacey found him and took care of him. He hid his face from her when he saw her out of…shame?...fear?...She didn’t know. She brought him a mask, and he accepted it as his new face. He accepted her as his mother.
Elisha may very well be a monster. But he’s Lacey’s monster.
