16 de agosto de 1998

It was a sweltering August day in the Dominican, with the temperature's outside peaking well over 100 Fahrenheit. Little Hanari was wide awake, just as the sun crept over the ocean-covered horizon, and ready to begin the day. Everyone in the house was sleeping, but he had made this a habit. He would wake up before his family members, go get some empanadas left over from last night, some natural juice, and sit in front of the fuzzy television in the living room.

Little Hanari always loved Super Hero's, and there were quite a few interesting ones floating around Caribbean television. They didn't get US channels, so he didn't know Superman, Batman, Spiderman, the like. Instead he idolized Jericho Drumm, White Tiger, Stigmata, Fade, Shades, Bantam and others. These characters were so real to them. He had lunchboxes, posters, tee shirts--much like American kids with the superhero's they watch in the states--and to Little Hanari, these characters were demi-gods.

The Dominican had mostly female superhero's, as did a lot of the Caribbean, and to Little Hanari, they didn't have the same luster. But there WAS one who he did have an affection towards.....

Shades.

Shades, he was so much like him.

Hanari had always been a rebel child, in and out of trouble in both school and around town, and had always been more drawn to the bad guys than the good ones. Hanari always felt there was more to be learned from the bad guys. That in a weird way, the bad guys seemed to help people more.

Shades, whose real name was Herman Alverez, was of Dominican decent, just like Hanari. Shades was skilled in hand to hand combat, and that intrigued Hanari, who often had to fight for his life against bullies. Hanari was always the small kid, so he was an easy target in the dog-eat-dog streets. His best friends, Pedro, Sebastián and Diego were a bond that couldn't be broken. They formed a clique around the streets of Santo Domingo called the Lone Riders, or in spanish the Jinetes Solitarios, or JS, and would cause mayhem whenever they could. Pickpockets, scams, and an vendetta against those who took advantage of others.

Oh, the irony.

Shades and Comanche ran the streets with then Carl Lucas and Willis Stryker. The four of them made up the gang called the Rivals. JS looked at themselves as the rivals in a way. When they grew up, Lucas went straight, but Shades and Comanche continued to associate with Stryker once he became a mobster himself.

JS promised themselves that they would never split apart, never change for the better, would always continue to get money for their families however they could and make sure the streets were clean for everyone else.

Lucas would grow up to become Luke Cage. Hanari often wondered which of his friends would be Luke Cage. He would ponder for hours sometimes. He was Shades already, he called it, but which of them would become more famous than even him?

Hanari would often sit and wonder what it would be like to be on TV, to be a super hero. To have the world eating from his palm, and to be able to come and go where he pleases when he pleases because he was "doing good".

Hanari munched on his empanadas and watched Shades and Cage on the fuzzy, crackly, low definition Tv---often stopping to adjust the bunny ears or smack it once or twice when the picture became too bad--and dream that he, one day, would be a TV legend.

Little did he know that 20 years later he would have kids sitting in their livins rooms, mesmerized, watching him become the hero he would portray on TV.........

A real life god.

To Be Continued.

After Savage, Hanari, ecstatic, picked up his cell phone and dialed a number quickly. As if he had dialed it a million times before. He couldn't wipe the smile off his face, he had done what he told the world he was going to do, he won his first match!

Somewhere, in the depths of the Dominican Republic, a rotary phone rang. Yes, many households in the Dominican in 2019 still had rotary phones.

After about 6 rings, they picked up.

The following dialogue is in Spanish. this is the translation:

"Mamma! It's Hanari! Did you see the show?!"

A sigh from the other line.

"No, Hanari, that is on premium channels down here and I just dont have the extra money to put towards watching another pipe dream of yours."

Hanari wasn't deterred, he kept going as if she said nothing at all.

"Mamma! I won! I won my first match, just like I said I was going to do!"

"Great."

Damn Spanish mothers were tough.

"Now....I was just told I Have a Television Title Match next week on Savage. I am in the Main Event Mother! After one match! I must have impressed!"

There was a few moments of silence on the line, and Hanari had grown nervous. He began to chew on his lip. Had this good news given his mother a heart attack?

Finally, she spoke.

"You call down here with all this news about winning a "wrestling" match up in the states. In America. It's all about you, isn't it Hanari? It always has been. You call here, knowing it costs money from there, to tell me you won a match. Do you want me to drop everything and come up there? I mean, I don't get it Hanari. You are so obsessed with yourself that you call me after a minor victory. Look what you have done here, look what you have built........"

It was the next line that got him.....

"......and look what you have destroyed. I am happy you are living out your dream to be something more than just another broke hispanic living in one of the worlds poorest countries, but we aren't. You need to realize, and understand, that you left this world behind without any way to fix it and now you want to call me and boast about one match, one win, one time? Don't call back here again until you have something to show for it, because as of right now you are the same man who left........an arrogant, self-centered, ignorant little boy who has to be praised at all times in order to sleep at night. I want you to be better than that, and you should want to be too....."

Hanari took a few moments to digest, then spoke up.

"I will be calling back next week, mother, and when I call you next week I will be calling as a champion."

"You better, or don't call at all."

The line went dead. Hanari stared at his phone for a few moments before getting up with a sigh. Putting his phone in his travel bag, he slung it over his shoulder. He had to win this title, he couldn't let his mother down.

Again.

"Hanari has to ask, es dis hombre estupido? Hanari likes to stay positive, but som' a da things dis chico said.....mang.....

He not taking Hanari seriously.

Tha' es okay, fine with Hanari. Debes estar realmente nervioso, hermano. Personally, Hanari has no idea how chu keep a title that long, but chu must be pretty talented. Tha' or this roster sucks culo sudoroso, which es a possibility also. Chu claim chu kno' nothin' about Hanari.....well, Hanari knows something about chu. Sí, Hanari know quite a bit. Hanari knows that chu are an force here, intimidating, and a good champion. Hanari know's people here fear chu. Sí, Sí, Sí some hermano's might but Hanari does not. Mi whole life, mang, was about survival. Chu can never hit Hanari as hard as life has. Chu may have beat that chico de masa Peter, but base on what Hanari has seen, heard and read, so has every humano employeed. Sí Hanari knows Peter es no threat, so chu tryin to use that to pat on the back? No, hermano, no gon' work. Chu have held the title for 125 days, dat es impressive, Sí, but chu have never face Hanari Carnes. Chu have never face a hombre who has had to fight for everythin' en his life. Who has nothin' to lose, Sí. Nobody think Hanari has a chance against the dominan' Mastermind, but they all wrong, chico. Chu was right, Hanari would have beaten doughboy Gilmour dis week and become campeón, but Hanari es going to beat chu also!

Dis is just like the TV Hanari used to watch. The héroe stories. Da feel good stories. Hanari cannot let Mastermind run ova' him like he run ova' everyone else, no, no, no, no bueno. No me gusta. Hanari es goin' to bring da fight, y Hanari va a pelear contigo! That mean Hanari going to out-fight chu, mang, an' humble chu.

Chu see, Hanari es a humble hombre. Hanari has worked for everythin' en his life, Sí, and has neva back down! What make chu think this any different? Nobody think Hanari can do it, even mi madre, but Hanari es coming back to the Estados Unidos to prove dem all wrong! Chu may not know much' about Hanari right now but after Savage, chu will, hombre, best believe chu will!

An.....dis culo es all happy, es all proud of himself.....he get to pick da type of match. Whattya know? He pick submission! He use some move....Mind Controller. Chu MUST not know much about Hanari, idiota, porque mi finisher es a submission too! Did chu not watch las' week? No, too busy bein' full of yaself, hermano.

Chu play right into Hanari strength! Hombre estúpido! Hanari es goin' into Montana, and Hanari es going to not just take ya title, mang, but Hanari es goin' to break your arm chico!

Viva la Republica!

Viva la republica dominicana!

Larga vida a Hanari Carnes!

¡Viva el nuevo campeón de la televisión!
