ASHES
The ashes and rubble were familiar to him. His feet crunched over the dirt, ash and rubble as he took slow deliberate steps.
"All that is left, Danny....."
He picked up a piece of dark dust and let it run through his fingers. It blew away softly in the slight Florida breeze.
"I was in a bad situation.....and I did what thought I needed to do. I did the only thing in my mind that made sense to me."
He looked a the plot of land around him, 90 percent of which was charred and scorched.
"What I couldn't do with words and phrases, I did with gasoline and flame. What I didn't want in my life anymore, I took out forever."
He watched the ocean breeze ruffle the trees. As the branches rustled and the leaves made that familiar quiet click, he could almost hear the screams.
"I still hear the voices. I still hear the screams. I still smell the flesh. But unlike before, I no longer battle with it. I accept it. When I am in a jam, Danny, I don't sulk. I don't walk around wanting everyone to feel sorry for me and say poor me. I don't want people looking at me as a charity case. So I do something about it. I understand that you haven't been in the company as long as I have so therefore do not have the experience, but Danny boy.......you just don't have the killer instinct needed. It's simple. You dress up like Halloween lawn decoration, and for what? To LOOK scary? The illusion, the cruel, cruel illusion, of making people think you're insane. You aren't. You just would like to be. You'd like to be imperial, but all you are is inferior.
They pounded on the doors and windows, but there was nowhere to go. Each one was vice-tight. The smoke seared their lungs, and made it torture to inhale even the slightest.
The window's were an eternity away, but they needed to fight through the rubble to get to it. Maybe, just maybe, if they could get to a window they could somehow break it. Something....anything......
Their skin felt as though it had been in an oven for an hour, and their mouths tasted as though they had been chewing on cotton for days.
I have risen through the ranks to become to most powerful and influential superstar on this roster. Everything that happens here is either because of me or in a reaction to something I had a hand in. Danny you are nothing but a pawn in my chess game. You have been interesting here to say the least, but the company wouldn't shed a tear if you were gone. They NEED me, they WANT you. There is a difference there. Your promo's have tigers and Simpsons references.....you have to resort to going to nursing homes and playing board games........
The floor was collapsing beneath them. Where the hell were the police and firefighters? Why hadn't their alarm went off? And oh god, where were the kids?
The sound was a loud roar. She wasn't even sure fire made a sound......but this was 50 thousand times louder than thunder pounding. And it was constant. It was so bright. So freaking bright.
Her husband had made it to the front door. It did not budge. He tried kicking it. It was seemingly reinforced with something. Why wasn't it budging?
She coughed again, it hurt her throat.
She needed to get to that window.
It seemed like a football field away.
"Danny, your finisher is called Imperial Execution. How fitting. Because that is what is going to happen Saturday Night. It's also ironic that your other primary finisher is called Imperial Insanity, because that is what you must be to think you have a snowballs chance in hell in this match. There are levels to this. There is a pecking order. There is a way of doing things. There is an earning system in play. Sure, a win here would be HUGE for you whereas a loss from me wouldn't matter in the long run, but a win for me over you----just a shoulder shrug. You see, winning for you is hopeful, for me it's expected. I expect to win every time I step into that ring. You just hope you can.......
Wouldn't that just be neat?
"Help!" she called out, but knew she wasn't talking to anyone in particular. There was nobody there. Nobody to help.
The clock fell off the wall as it melted away. The drywall had a large hole. The couch ripped and split in front of her. She made her move. Running at full speed but hardly moving, she ran across the floor. Using agility she never knew she had, she jumped over the couch. Landing harder than she would have liked on the floor, she hobbled to the window.
Locked. Of course.
She had to break it.
She brought the side of her fist to the glass.
The Imperial Shitshow Said:You see Chris, you’re an obvious shadow of your former self. 31-10. Cling onto that. Your past is important, each one of those wins and losses have made you who you are today.
What is the point of living if you aren't winning? Have you ever played sports in your life, Danny? Every win matters, of course, even the little ones. If Alabama football loses to LSU or to the Citadel, it's still a loss, no matter the prestige of the opponent. You're in it to win it or you shouldn't be in it all. Danny your biggest problem isn't a lack of talent, it is a lack of humility. You claim you are studying me, monitoring me, trying to learn my ways, yadda yadda. Praise be to Chaos, I get it. Drool over how good I've been, I get it. But then you claim you are studying me so you can take my throne? Studying me so you can sit on the chair atop the mountain? That I am fading to obscurity? Not so fast sweet-cheeks......I AM JUST GETTING STARTED. But that is the beauty of chaos....it can change in the snap of a finger. It's kind of like life. You just never know what is coming next. That is why I do what I do. That is why I am who I am. You can make a big deal about my recent wins, but you fail to look at my history because it scars you. I won the Universal Title here and your mother was still in her first trimester of her pregnancy with Jim Caedus's lovechild. See what I am hinting at? I held that title because I earned my way there. Nobody says you won't, trust me. But you won't as long as I am here. That title, that division, that level is mine. I am the supreme being overlooking the land and right now Danny you are the simple serf who is making sure the radish's stay watered. You're stuck in the field yet you are saying "one day I will be king". Danny......baby steps. Try to get inside the castle first before you try to take a stab at the biggest throne in professional wrestling.
Out of the corner of her eye she noticed something. Something.....someone.
Trying to look while fumbling with the window lock, it looked like a human. Oh yes! Yes! Maybe he could help!
The fire rushed behind her, she could hear it. Feel it on the back of her legs.
She slammed on the window as hard as she could again, and couldn't even hear it. She felt it, but her silent slams were seemingly doing nothing. The figure on the lawn moved closer. Too slow, much to slow!
Walk faster, my god walk faster!
She heard her husband yell, and saw th bottom of his pants on fire as he backed into a corner.
"The doors and window's have all been sealed, Maureen, this place is a vault! A trap! Someone did this!"
He winced as the fire ate away his socks.
The Imperial Shitshow Said:You see, my desperation in my current situation is signs of change. Signs of evolution. For through the hottest fires are born the most beautiful artifacts
He bends down, picking up some more dirt. There is a small, silver shine coming through the dirt. Pushing a small piece aside, he sees it is an earring.
"That is probably the most intelligent thing you have said since joining the roster, Danny. I commend you for realizing. You see, I have risen from the ashes. I had nothing left when I got here. I had no career anymore, I no longer had the love of my life, and I was out of shape. Body, heart and spirit were all gone. Phoenix wrestling burned it all away. Scorched it to nothing but ashes and rubble. But as I walk through these ashes and rubble, and see now the truth. I came up from nothing. This success is self made through simply wanting it more than anyone else. Putting in the necessary effort. This rubble symbolizes my life and this little "success story" of mine that you went out of your way to point out......it came from simply this...nothing."
He bent down and picked up what looked to be a piece of a teddy bear. It was so burned that it was hardened to fossil thickness.
"They took everything from me, so I took everything from them. That is what I do. Phoenix Wrestling closed their doors shortly after releasing me--because they realized that I was their rock. I was their anchor. I was their sanity within the chaos. Same with this. I am the rock that this place sits on and anything that challenges that will be burned to rubble, to ashes."
She recognized the person on their lawn. He had shoulder length blonde hair--this stood out because he was wearing all black. Her husbands screams echoed with the roar, adding a sort of evil harmony to the tune of death.
Too late for him she whipped her head back around as the fire engulfed her legs and waist. She looked dead into the eyes of the man on the lawn.
He stared back at her.
Mouthing help, mouthing please, slamming the window again she could see the man smiling. He waved to her as if waving goodbye.....a suureal, slow wave and that smile that tore her heart out.
Looking into the hous the man saw this witch of a woman slamming the window and he assumed she was yelling....
Screaming.
As the fire raced up and covered the figurine in the window he dropped to his knees.
The last sight she saw was the man dropping to his knees.
"CHRIS!" she yelled as she felt her throat melt.
"Maureen" he said under his breath.
The damp grass felt cool on his cloth-laden knees.
Ring around the rosy
Pocket full of posies
Ashes, ashes
We all fall down
Ring Around the Rosie
What do you suppose we
Can Do To Fight the Darkness
In Which We Drown
Ring Around The Rosie
This Evil Thing, It Knows Me
Lost Ghosts Surround Me
I can't fall down
Down on his knees he felt them. He felt Maureen and Dan Dagastino. He felt the presence of the life he ruined, the family he crumbled, the careers that disappeared into the night.
He set a bloody rosary necklace down on the old rubble lot.
Danny Imperial was a shaky foundation to begin with. All that was left to do was light the match and watch him implode.
Danny Imperial's hopes and dreams would crumble at the feet of Chris Chaos......
......While Chris's flame would forever burn.
ASHES TO ASHES
DANNY-BOY FALLS DOWN
LET THE CHAOS IN
