DOES THIS FEEL CONVOLUTED YET?
"Bro, you can’t even be hurt.” Stevie Tyler’s roommate’s words were echoing in his head as he was rushed through the ER. That wasn’t all he was hearing. The whole thing was quite surreal. He could hear Rayha, his guardian angel telling him the same thing. Assuring him that with Baal’Nezz Golgari, Gary, possessing him he could come to no real damage. Mingled with all that noise, he could hear the roar of the crowd in his head. Loudest of all, though, was the sound of his leg snapping thanks to Angelus and Tony Santos.
Gary had been absent the last week prior to the match that saw Stevie Tyler plummet from a ladder. Perhaps, if he had shown up sooner, it might not have happened. Why exactly did he refuse to show up until it was too late? Sure, his feelings were hurt. Gary, the vicious demon had felt like there was something special between himself and Stevie. At every turn, however, it seemed as though Stevie just wanted him out of his life.
Was that all?
Please, allow this narrator to rewind and reveal the unseen circumstances surrounding that fateful night.
An ancient, if slightly disorganized, ancient order known as The Order of the Owl had targeted Stevie Tyler. It was their belief that thanks to all of the demonic/spiritual/angelic forces that were being attracted to Stevie, that eventually they would all converge on him in one cataclysmic moment.
This was something The Order would not stand for. They knew The End was coming, but they sought to call the shots on the whens and hows. If they could control that, they could survive and rebuild society as they saw fit. Several of The Order had already made attempts at Stevie’s life.
Lorne Boatwright, Mr. Kenta, and Olga Petrov had all attacked and they had all failed.
It was time for The Order to regroup.
Drotte the Liar knew this. Drotte had never felt any connection to a mortal before, but there was something about Stevie that intrigued him. Drotte saw the writing on the wall and knew that if Stevie continued on the reckless path through the XWF that Gary had him on, The End would come soon.
He waited, playing a fool. He saw the lapse in connection between Gary and Stevie leading up to that fateful night. He saw Gary attempt to control Stevie early in that match, but Drotte intervened just long enough to see Stevie fall from the ladder and shatter his leg. Then, and only then, once the damage was done, did he allow Gary to pass.
Stevie was rushed to the hospital, but he never made it to the doctor. Drotte had appealed to his boss. To Gary’s boss. He explained how Gary had allowed all of this to happen, and that The End was coming. He also reasoned that, if he could have the boy for just a little while, he could solve it all.
The Boss agreed and Stevie walked out, healed, and disappeared to Parts Unknown.
Drotte the Liar, created a new moniker for himself…Dr. Zero=Dr. Aught=Draught=Drotte…It really was quite clever if this narrator may say so. He devised an absurd, and oddly, mostly true backstory to disguise who he really was.
There really had been a chicken in that lab who hated his captors, and Dr. Zero, Drotte, out of malevolent kindness of his heart, incorporated him into his plan. He fused the creature into himself…Into Stevie…and did make Minions of all of the scientists there. Drotte bought completely into his own persona. At a certain point, he ceased to be simply “Drotte the Liar”. He became the lie.
Drotte became the raving mad demonic chicken scientist, DR. ZERO.
He had to. The fact that he bought his own story hid him from the remaining members of The Order. Until Lenny Johnson was tipped off.
You see, Lenny may look like a stereotypical, dumb Southerner with his pristine cowboy hat hiding his silver hair, but he had some basic smarts about him. He found it odd that, right as Stevie Tyler disappeared into nothingness, a lab in Parts Unknown had been overrun and changed into a political hotbed in the area. Couple that with the fact that the new head of the lab, Dr. Zero had the same basic build as Stevie…and I think it’s easy to see how he began to see a bigger picture. How Lenny was even aware of Parts Unknown has yet to be seen.
Lenny sent a mole in to pose as one of Dr. Zero’s Minions. For a while, it seemed as if nothing was amiss. Until the big guy started trying to ransack the place. Once or twice a week, Gary would burst in and try to take back what he claimed was his. Gary wanted Stevie back. That news, and Dr. Zero’s obvious concern about it, was what told Lenny Johnson all he needed to know.
Once he knew, it was just a matter of patience. He waited it out, watching for an opportunity to strike. Then he met Detective Lieutenant James Boulder. The man who had been tracking Dr. Zero’s partner at Lethal Lottery, Egyptian Snow Pharaoh.
It may have seemed as though he failed in his quest to stop Dr. Zero at that moment. But he was really just aiming to see him up close. After months of tracking, Lenny had found the boy. Finally, The Order of the Owl was close again.
“Good work, Mr. Jonson,” Christopher Thalmond said to Lenny Johnson. Thalmond paced back and forth in front of the giant screen shining with the owl and it’s sword. “After all of the disgusting failure we have witnessed with this Order, it is truly refreshing to have you find success. The End is nearer than ever, and it is time for us to strike harder than ever before.”
Lenny, Amintore Buscaglione, and Sadoon Jalali, the remaining members of The Order of the Owl sat in the darkened room in their stadium seats. Sadoon lifted a glass of water to his mouth. The rings on every finger twinkled with the little bit of light emitted from the screen.
“And what is our plan now?” he said.
“Yes. It seems as if we are at a dead end,” Buscaglione stated. “Now that we know where he is, surely the demons will stay with him. And now he has the Pharaoh weapon to protect him as well. What will we do?”
Thalmond smirked. “Lenny, please enlighten your cohorts.”
Lenny stood up and Thalmond handed him a control for the screen.
“Gentlemen,” he started, “there is a group of ‘heroes’ that look for just this sorta’ opportunity to take out evildoers like ‘Dr. Zero’ and his new plaything ‘Egyptian Snow Pharaoh’. And it just so happens that they like what we have to offer. A goddamn heaping helpin’ of greenbacks.” He aimed the control at the screen.
*CLICK*
The screen presented a team of five individuals. They were in uniform and each was a different color. Black, turquoise, pink, purple, and gold.
Sadoon hurled his glass at the screen, shattering both.
“NO!” he shouted. “NOT THEM! NOT SUPER SQUAD R5!”
“Oh yeah, son. SSR5 is on the payroll.”
