Bedtime for the Scotts
Have you ever had one of those nights where you felt like your neck was going to melt off? It was HOT, even for one in the morning. It tended to get like this sometimes when I would be at home. I have lived in Ohio for most of my life, and the weather never changes. Obviously that's a play on words. The true factor is that Ohio has some of the most varied weather in the country. It could be one hundred and five degrees one day, then drop thirty degrees overnight. It was something you get use to after so much time, but some things you never get used to.
Are you coming to bed?
That was my wife, Stacy Lynn. She has been the only consistent thing in my life the past few years it seems. I met her one night on a random excursion to my local Wal-Mart. Seemed like an unlikely place to meet your future bearer of your child, but it could have been more unusual. My brother, Scott, met his ex-wife over the internet on that old social network MySpace. I never figured it was going to work out, but that's a whole different story. I do think about him a lot nowadays. I never really got over hearing the news about him, and it has been especially hard on Ivy. She always loved spending the weekend at his house. He always had the newest gadgets and video games. I remember one time Stacy and I came over a little early to pick her up. She was knee deep in a grudge match with Scott facing a clan in some two verses two action on Modern Warfare. Least of me to say, it was a long two hours before she noticed we were there...
Yeah, in a minute. Is Ivy asleep?
Yeah, I think so. Can you check on her before you come to bed?
Stacy was merely across the hall from Ivy's room, but she knew I was going to check on her anyways. She may be twelve years old, but she's still my baby girl. I have always figured we would have two kids, but ever since we had Ivy, Stacy has never really been the same. There were so many complications during the pregnancy, not to mention the labor process. After twenty-eight hours, she needed to get an emergency c-section. I was a total wreck that night, and I will never forget it...
Yeah, I'll be in there in a minute.
That night lasted a century it seems. After the doctor decided to perform the c-section, Ivy's heart rate had already started to drop. They were nurses and mid-wives rushing in and out of the room, getting her mobile to an awaiting team. They knew that time was not on their side, and needed to act quickly. Since the procedure was a delicate process, I was not permitted to be in the room and needed to wait in a nearby room. I can tell you every little detail of the next hour I say in that room. There was exactly fifty-seven drop ceiling tiles, two which had obvious water damage. Two different types of carpet were used in the room. One had a rough weave that resembled course hair, while the other was nearly the same, just lighter. The shades were unnoticeable to a short glance, but time points out the defects in the simplest things. It's a good thing my sister was not there. There were two stacks of magazines on two different end tables. Game Informer, US Weekly, Esquire, Fortune, Popular Mechanics, two different copies of People from the same week, the Dispatch newspaper from three days ago, and what looked like a medical pictorial. I didn't read any of them, but I do remember one of the People magazines was missing the photos of celebs in the front. Of course this was the summer issue with different actresses in nice little bathing suits. Oh, and I mean LITTLE bathing suits with just enough coverage to not be a early photo in a Hustler spread.
Ivy was sound asleep, like she normally was after a long day a school and soccer practice. I still have trouble gripping the idea that my sweet little firefly is growing up so fast. I mean, it seems like not long ago i was sitting in the room, when a doctor came in to let me know what was happening...

OK, I just wanted to let you know what we are going to do...
This is common in situations like this, right doctor?
Well, yes it can be. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be that easy.
What are you saying?
We are going to do everything we can, but I want you to know the worst possible outcome. There is a small possibility we could lose the baby.
Oh my....god......
Now that's only a worst case. Your daughter is stuck somehow, and we are not completely sure how. We are going to do an emergency c-section and hopefully get her out. Right now she is running out of air and there is no fluid left.
Is there anything I can do? Please, ANYTHING!
It is OK. We are doing everything we can, and have every intention on making this a success.......

It has always been hard for me to think it could have gone either way that night. I'm just glad that I can stand here right now, and watch my precious Ivy dream away the night. I could never take this gift for granted no matter what happens in my life. She has always been my sure sign for hope in this crazy life I chose to live. I have been through hell and back and back around for a second trip. I know I can make her proud of me, no matter what I do.
She's out like a light, that practice took it out of her more then normal.
Well, it's coming up on the playoffs for the league. They are ranked third, so they are training harder now.
As long as she's enjoying it.
I proceeded to walk towards my side of the bed, slipping my night pants off before sliding under the covers. Before you get any bright idea, I always sleep without pants on. I slide closer towards Stacy's side of the bed and lay a simple kiss on her lips, before laying on my back staring at the now darken ceiling. Stacy also laid on her back looking at the same ceiling.
So, when do you think we should tell her?
I don't know. We still have quite a bit of paperwork to submit before we can even see him.
I know, but she's going to be so excited. She's always wanted....
I know, I know. I love you honey.
I love you too........
