**Jack Cain is sitting on a chair in a darkened room. He is off centre - as the middle of the screen shows a doorway - contrasting with a stark white light coming form within. His head faces the floor, the white light casting only the slightest reflection off his leather trenchcoat. He shakes his head and blows out through his lips. His tired demeanour reflecting his expression as he raises his head. He looks exhausted, and carries a black eye and fresh cut on his brow. His knuckles are bloodied and his T-shirt has a slash running across the front, with a cut underneath oozing blood with every breath. Despite all that, he is grinning**

I love doin' what I do.

**He regards the blood on his hands**

Might cost you a bit of blood, but in the end, you're doin' good work, y'know? You're makin' people answer for what they've done. There's nothing, as pure, as just, as doin' that.

Not only does it mean that people who have done wrong get the message, it also gives you a bit of satisfaction doesn't it, Gabriel?

**Cain picks up a manilla folder on the floor. He thumbs through it, pictures of Gabriel Emerick and text contained within - medical records, police records, birth certificate**

Gabriel Emerick - I get ya. I understand what drives ya. Revenge is a powerful motivator, it can get you through the darkest of days. The times when you feel like there ain't nothin' left to live for, to fight for. It gets you there. Revenge can take ya from point A to point B and you don't have to worry about the trip - because it'll carry ya through no matter how rough it gets.

Revenge is like a drug. You can;t get enough of it, 'cos you think the next time you experience it, it'll be even better, but you know it's gonna be sweet when you finally get to the big dog - the guy at the end you been seekin' revenge against from the beginnin'

That? That's the biggest kicker of all - that's like ten thousand fuckin' orgasms with the girl o' ya dreams all at once, the biggest fuckin' meal you can stuff down ya face, winnin' the one hundred million lottery and then winnin' it again a couple a minutes later.

Ya feel like you're on top of the world, like nothin' can touch ya, like you're Jesus Christ Fuckin' Superstar.

Then what Gabriel? What the fuck happens when you get the guys responsible for your brother? I'll tell ya what.

That feelin' I was talkin' about? It happens, and it happens stronger than any fuckin' feelin' you had in your life. Stronger than your first kiss, stronger than hittin' your first home run, or three pointer, stronger than when you take your first woman to bed, and you think that after that, it'll be paradise.

Dead fuckin' wrong.

That feelin'? It lasts a second. Maybe even less. Then it's all over. All you get is that heartbeat of satisfaction, and after that?

Nothin'

**Cain gets up out of the chair. Next to him is a lead pipe. He picks it up and rolls it around in one hand. He places it on the chair, then reaches into his pocket and put on a thick black glove. He then reaches down behind the chair and produces a length of barbed wire. Carefully, slowly, he wraps it around the pipe. Removing the glove, he walks through the door into the illuminated room. In the middle is a man tied to a chair. His clothes are bloodstained and he's badly beaten. He's also gagged, but his eye reveal fear. Pure fear.**

Revenge is a one time deal Gabriel. It doesn't keep you going. It dies like a weak flame.

**Cain swings the pipe at the the man in the chair. He screams in agony as the blow gouges a chunk out of his shoulder. Blood sprays over Cain and the white tiled floor**

But punishment? That's the gift that keeps on fuckin' givin' Gabriel.

**Cain swings again, digging deep grooves into the man's arm, sending rivulets of blood onto his already stained jeans**

See I stopped believin' in revenge a long time ago. It has it's uses, but while it's a motivator, it burns out quick. It doesn't give you what you need to keep goin' - and that's what I see in you Gabriel.

**Another blow, across the man's back, and Cain this time wrenches the pipe out of the tissue, again making the man scream**

The quick and easy path - the one of least resistance. Sure you're gonna come out like a mad dog, because I've probably upset ya, and your'e gonna hit me like a missile. But just like your motivation - ya gonna burn out pretty quick.

Then I can take over with what I do best.

**The camera pans up to Cain, and he starts repeatedly hitting the bound man with the pipe out of shot. Blood sprays everywhere, coating Cain's face in red**

I can keep goin' where you can't Gabriel. I'm bigger, stronger, faster, quicker and better. And even after all that, I'm still gonna be the one who will be able to push further, because you're gonna fail.

To quote an old friend:

This is not vengeance. Revenge is not a valid motive, it's an emotional response. No, not vengeance. Punishment.

**The camera fades out as Cain continues to beat the man in the chair.**
