Jack: Let me tell you a story about trust, young Caleb. About three people who have never met in their lives at all. This will be the first time they will come in contact with each other, and this meeting involves the endangerment of one of the men's lives.
Jack: This is a story about Hector. Hector had a hard time trusting people. He couldn't trust people when they were trying to be friendly with him because he was convinced that everyone just wanted something from him, whether it was money that he'll never get back, a ride to who knows where, or a favor for something that might earn him a criminal record. No, everyone was out to get him, he had that belief firmly implanted into his mind, and it isn't going to be dislodged any time soon.
These thoughts made Hector paranoid and fearful of the outside world and all who inhabit it. He tended to stay inside quite often to avoid any and all physical contact with anyone or anything. He only went outside in order to buy food, go to work (where he hardly ever talked to anyone), and to go to the bank to get his money. One day, his coworkers forced him to go to a party because no one should have to spend their life cooped up inside all the time. They thought that everyone, including the social outcasts, should have fun at least once.
The party was nothing more than your average backyard pool party. There was a local band performing, alcohol is involved, basically it was an ideal college party. Hector's coworkers received invitations for this party because they were only part timers in the office that he worked in, and they had to bring in at least one other person in order make it look like they had some sort of friends. As soon as they brought him inside of the party, they ditched him, leaving the introvert to his own devices. Hector, not used to all of this action, found himself huddling against a wall for most of the party, where mostly no one would pay attention to, or bother him.
Only two people took notice of him throughout the duration of the party, both of whom were female.
Beth was a goth girl that was kind of an introvert herself. She didn't really have too many friends and was often shy around others. Most of the time she expressed her ideas through actions. Most of those actions were rather violent, however, and resulted in her getting into quite a bit of trouble with the officials. When she wasn't getting arrested for battery, she's generally disliked from her peers because she hardly seems to care for anyone else sans herself. Hector, not knowing this, judges her solely on appearances and body language. She seemed to keep herself huddled into a ball and didn't really interact with others too much. When she did, she was rather aggressive, either by throwing her drink at other people or just shoving them aside. What didn't help her case was the fact that she was dressed in mostly dark colors while wearing spike studded wristbands and a choker. Hector decided to keep away from her at all costs, even though she seemed to take quite an interest in him.
Gillian seemed to be a more happy go lucky kind of girl. She briefly looked at Hector, but that brief moment was long enough for him to have his heart melt at the sight of her. She often volunteered for charity work and gave almost half of her college income to the homeless. She had a smile on her face most of the time, spreading good vibrations to anyone who looked at her. What Hector didn't know, however, was that she was a spoiled brat that was willing to step on anyone she sees fit in order to better her chances at graduation. Hector didn't care. He just wanted to brave it and say hello to the woman who had smitten him so easily.
He inhaled deeply and exhaled just as hard before mustering up the courage to talk to Gillian. Beth, sensing danger, tried to warn Hector about her character before he would end up regretting it for the rest of his life. He didn't want to listen to her, as he thought she was just lying in order to make herself look better. So he ignored her and went on his way to talk to Gillian.
There is a brief pause. Caleb, curious to see where else the story goes, urges Jack to continue on with his story by spinning his wrist in a circular motion.
Gillian pushed Hector into the pool. He didn't really know how to swim either, so he would either drown or try to have someone save him. Gillian ended up laughing in his face and walked away, much to his horror and heartbreak. Beth, however, called out for help to save the strange man she never met in her life. It took her a while to find anyone willing enough to dive into the pool to save him, but at that point it was too late. Water had already passed into his nostrils and into his lungs. He started to sink before one of his coworkers could dive in and pull him out.
Caleb: He died because some woman he thought he could trust pushed him into an open pool?
Jack: Correct.
Caleb: And just how do you know that story? How do you know that the story went down exactly the way you told it?
Jack: She told us....she told us everything.
With that, Jack turns around and starts to walk away from Caleb.
Jack: I'd give Kevin a chance if I were you. A man you thought was once your most bitter enemy might turn out to become one of your best friends. I hope the same can ring true for me and Pest.
Jack walks away from Caleb as the camera returns to both Kevin and Melissa, who are walking towards Caleb as the scene fades out.
