The word never really meant anything and I never actually expected answer. Yet it is the question that I asked every day... Why?

People always assumed I feared jail and I feared death. Being a police officer though, I learnt how to die a long time ago. It didn't matter to me that death was looming over me. Death looms over everyone and everything. I wouldn't have it any other way...

The door knocked three times. I sat there for a moment, a soft voice coughed from behind the firm wooden door. Slowly, I stood, wearing black tight jeans and a white shirt. I looked out the peep hole and I couldn't work out who it was but I decided that it didn't matter who it was.

The man came straight through the door and locked it behind him. I was taken aback, baffled. I didn't take notice of him, I just sat down again and crossed one leg over the other and looked up at the hooded man. He seemed rather old fashioned. He wore a hooded gown that seemed more like a disguise than anything. Removing his hood, he revealed a bold head and a plain face. If I were to describe him as simply as I could, he looked like the template of a character that you were yet to personalise. Perhaps that was why he was so hard to recognise. Though, I still had no idea who he was... His voice was softly fierce in the warmth of my home.

“Ammon.”

“What?”

“My name. That's my name.”

“Forgive me, you're going to have to remind of when I asked what your name was? What I want to know is why you've just come rudely barging into my home, I know it's not much but it's all I have left.”

“Well first, I must apologize for my entrance, I had no intention on entering in such a way but I believe I was being followed. You see, people are out to get you Ambrose, and I have been sent by the XWF to ensure that you are not got so to speak. You see, your victory on Monday has made you slightly more precious than the federation would have you believe. Your story still circulates the news and now you've proven you can fight a strong opponent. Not only did you beat him but you weakened him to the extent that he could no longer raise his arm.”

“I gave him his Last Breath. That's the finishing move I use, and although it is a simple sleeper hold it is one that is executed to absolute perfection. Of course that doesn't matter, you don't seem that interested in fighting and what not.”

“I'm interested in the XWF succeeding but I cannot say I care much for violence. You look at me and you must think that I am completely opposite to yourself. You would be wrong though.”
“Ah, and how is that? I mean it is clear that we both speak with such poetic fortitude but I never really believed that counted for much. Speaking with wit and intellect does not make two people similar.”

“No, you are right. I was a prisoner though, in a much different country to this one. In Europe simply keeping your head down isn't enough to avoid any dis-pleasures so I became a fine actor. Whilst you grew up with police officers and police guards where you undoubtedly learned to fight and die and live. I learned to act, avoid and speak. My name is actually Kenneth, but I was renamed Ammon by the people who knew me well because it means the hidden, the forgotten. That is in Ancient Egypt at least. It's always stuck and here we are.”
“Here you are, I have no idea why I need some glorified spy protecting me... Sure, people hate me but I highly doubt that anyone is out to get me. Surely...”

“How do you think you are here? Do you think you sit in this room quite comfortably because of some random witness. All of this is just one big plan and it certainly does not take a spy or a genius to figure that much out. I suppose you're to busy fighting to consider anything. You stand no chance next week you know, Elisha is one of the finest competitors in this business.”

“Without trying, there is no way to succeed. I have regret in facing him though, he is to be on my team next weekend after all... I remember them all you know Ammon. I remember every single face. The prisoners. They weren't all good men and but they weren't all bad man. You must remember that in every battle, every war, such as the war we are in... there is no good and bad. I would like to pretend that the side I fight for is the side of right, but good and evil always fights on the behalf of both sides. That's what war is, it's never plain black and white. It's fighting for the lesser of two evils. The congregation has an aim and at least with Eli James holding the reigns of terror and misfortune you know what you're going to get. The Administrator network are the most unreliable group of people on the planet from what I have heard from others. Then again, all I hear is forbidden whispers. Tell me Ammon, which side do you fight for?”

“I fight for peace. It is as Miranda Tigris says it is. It's nothing but another squabble where fighters can seek the glory they desperately crave. Whilst it is not black and white, I think it could well be black and black or white and white. It makes no difference.”

“Okay, okay. Preach father, preach. I get it. More importantly though, what are you doing here? Who is after me?”

“Names and what not? It's never that simple I am afraid. It still remains unclear.”

“How can I trust you?”

“You can't. Trust no one. Trusting people is unwise.”

I did not know what to say to that. The man in front of me preaches stories and he preaches beliefs. He tells me what to do yet he wants me not to trust him? It's an impossible riddle. It's also a riddle that I did not care to find an answer for.

“Very well. Do you want anything else of me or will you be, how do I put this politely? Fucking off any time soon?”

“I think that will do, I will be back though. Remember, to watch out for those whispers, you never know where they might lead you.”

Ammon winked and then pulled up his hood before exiting the room. I sat back down and did the jigsaw in my head. There were still far too many pieces missing from this puzzle. The mystery awaits, and so does war.

There's no chance of me being a pawn in Theo and Eli's giant game of chess though and you can certainly count on that.
