Following the interaction between Dr. Baker and Elisha in the cave, Dr. Baker decided to leave the dark cave and head back to his temporary stay in the cabin. Elisha curled up with his Lacey doll while the growling stomach continues to echo through out his home bringing nothing but the reminder of his hunger.
Dr. Baker left with an uncertainty of what Elisha was dealing with. In his 40 plus years of being in this profession, he had never come across something like it. He wasn't sure where Eric Rex had been, and for him to come to more of a clear thesis on Elisha then he must find out. It just appears Elisha doesn't really want Eric Rex to talk and Eric doesn't really care to.
Eric Rex had a very different childhood that would mark him forever. The home he grew up in wasn't very big. It had a kitchen, living room, one-bath, and two bedrooms. It was a red brick house in a small little neighborhood that was quiet for most of the time. Eric usually stayed to himself and didn't really play 'imagination G.I. Joe' like the other kids. He usually watched television, read, or walked around just to get out. He wasn't into much of the games the kids his age played, though he did enjoy monopoly a lot.
At a young age, his dad began to beat him physically and abuse him verbally. His mother would just walk outside or scream for him to stop it. It just made it worse for Eric. His father would continue the beating if his mom wouldn't just watch with tears in her eyes. It was the only response the dad would accept for less-of-a-beating. Eric was just a young boy who couldn't really defend for himself, and when he tried, it just made things get worse. This was a routine for Eric. He would go to his kindergarten class, come home, watch television, and wait for his dad to come home drunk and begin the beating. Rarely did his dad come in too drunk to do anything and would just pass out, but it did happen on a few instances. Eric's mom had to watch this whole thing unfold before her eyes. The man she loved and married was a different person. The man that held their first born child in his arms with tears of joy in his eyes had changed. Nobody could talk sense into him. Nobody would dare cross him either. After all, his father was a former Army Ranger with an honorable discharge due to his back.
These beatings happened for several years. During a few months starting the third grade, he came home like normal. He did his routine with a swollen black eye he got from 'tripping on the porch', well that was his excuse. His father was walking in the door drunk ready to start the beating, except this time he was met by an unlikely person: his wife. Eric's mom stood between the two men she had loved with a pistol in her hand ready to shoot. The father wouldn't be threatened like this so he decided he was going to beat her up too, but as he slapped her once, the gun went off. He had been shot in the chest and looked surprised that she would actually do that. He slowly began to fall to the ground and she decided to unleash years of pain by shooting him until there were no more bullets. Eric watched as his father, an enemy, fell to the ground and laid in a pool of blood. Dead. Eric went to hug his mother and the two just embraced for a long time. His hero.
Neighbors had dialed 9-1-1 due to the gun shots heard nearby. When the cops arrived to the house, they saw an odd scene. A middle-aged man lying in a large pool of blood with several gun shot wounds, and nearby in the corner is a middle-aged woman holding a young boy tight, rocking back and forth singing 'Mary Had a Little Lamb'. The look at the lady's face was that of calm, peace, and happiness. The cops had asked what happened, and the response from the mother was, 'My son is free. The devil is dead. We won.' The officers had looked at each other and began to place their guns back in the holsters. One of them asked to get a clear answer if she shot him, and she said 'yes'.
She kissed Eric on the forehead and told him to be strong and survive. She went willingly to the police, and Eric watched as his hero was taken away from him. Both of his parents were now out of his life and he was left alone to survive. The other officers would take Eric away and place him in the hands of a foster care.
Due to all the rumors going around about what had happened and news reports, it was decided for Eric to move into a new city with a new set of foster parents to start fresh. Eric moved to Birmingham, Alabama. A very different environment that he was use to, but enjoyed the southern hospitality.
He starts back school and had to redo the third grade because he didn't finish at his other school due to the tragedy. He was picked on a lot for being an orphan, and even some kids found out about his mother killing his father and would often anger him by making fun of the situation. Even though he was picked on, he learned how to scheme some of the kids.
He did start to make 'friends'. He talked, played at recess time, and was just one of the kids. Eric's preference would have been to stay a loner, but the weakness everyone knows by now, was a weakness back then too. When Eric was talking to another kid, it was to gain influence and put money in his pocket. Why did Eric start making friends? They had money. If a kid's parents didn't want him eating anything unhealthy, then for a price, Eric would bring that kid a bacon cheeseburger and fries. Eric would do anything for a buck. People liked Eric because they thought he cared, but he only showed he cared because of the underlining cause: money. It was probably why the only game Eric really enjoyed playing back home was monopoly.
Eric was the underground popular boy. He was one of the popular kids that we all know in High School, but was well-known, well-liked, and could get you things. Much like 'Red' in the movie Shawshank Redemption. He was the man to get you things as long as you could pay his price. He was still picked on but the bigger kids, but he didn't care as long as he got his money from the others. He was surviving.
There was another kid at school who was different than the other kids. He was picked on a lot by every kid in the school, especially a specific 5th grader bully named Bradley. Every day at recess, Bradley would beat on this other kid, give him wedgie, and take his lunch money. This kid wore flashy bright clothes and was half Italian, half Hispanic, and lived in Alabama. He didn't fit, and the other kids thought he didn't belong in their city, let alone America.
For an unknown reason, this Thursday was going to be a different day. Unknown to everyone involved. Two lives were going to be changed by a simple event. This kid on the playground was about to be picked on again by Bradley. As he was about to begin his beating ritual on the italian/hispanic kid, Eric Rex walked up.
"If I were you, I'd stop even before you begin.
"Oh yea? What are you gonna do about it?
Eric tackled Bradley to the ground and began dropping fists on his face nonstop. Bradley's blood was leaking on Rex's fists, and it would fly in the air from his fists on the playground. It also got on the flashy kids clothes, but he didn't care. He watched as Eric Rex beat the living crap out of Bradley. In this kids eyes, Eric was a hero, much like Eric's mom defended him against his father. He was his friend.
After a few minutes of beating, Eric stood up off of Bradley and warned him to stop or it'd get worse. This was the last day anyone ever picked on Eric and the flashy kid. Eric got up and walked away like nothing happened.
"Chee, thanks, Eric.
"No biggie. What's your name?
"I'm Sal. Sal Valencia. A future attorney at law.
"Attorney? That's what you wanna be when you get older?
"Yep! I'm going to make a lot of money and defend people.
"I like how you think, Sal.
"Wanna hang out, or come over sometime?
"Why not.
This was the start of a long friendship between Eric Rex and Sal Valencia. The two would always work together at getting a little money here and there, and scheming people. They gained influence all around. The two had a strong bond. Both were smart, and one was the brutal brawler, while the other was the flashy business man.
Sal ended up becoming a straight A student, never missed class, and was always trustworthy. His reputation followed everywhere he went. It would often help out the reckless, sometimes quick tempered, Eric Rex.
In high school, Eric had slept with his social studies teacher's daughter and supposedly got her pregnant. Eric didn't want to be a father, or in a relationship. He wanted sex. He got it. Now he's about to face a consequence. Because of Sal's wholesome reputation, he began spreading rumors about the girl sleeping with all kinds of guys at a party she went to and that she may be pregnant. Her father heard about these school rumors and confronted her. All she said was Eric Rex was the only one she slept with and he was the father. Her dad couldn't believe his own daughter over Sal Valencia. He decided to leave his job, take his family and move to another state. Sal did find out she wasn't pregnant.
It showed the influence Sal had and the friendship him and Eric had together. The two watched each others back and worked well together. Neither of them cheated the other or did things unknowingly behind the others back. This was a rarity friendship.
After high school, Sal was going to a University to pursue his dream career as an attorney and Eric was going into the armed forces. Eric chose to go as a Navy Seal. There, Eric had trouble learning some things like the family aspect of a Seal. One thing Eric was an ace at was adapting to his surroundings. From all the moving he had done as a orphan, and meeting all different sorts of families with different rules and standards than the next, he learned to adapt. It was a big strength of his. His strengths got stronger and his weaknesses just remained.
Nobody knows all what Eric saw during his time as a Seal or what missions he went on. Those things were kept classified and he never spoke about any of it. He did develop a knee and back problem which caused an honorable discharge 9 years in the service.
Through out his time as a Seal, and Sal's time studying to be an attorney, they kept in touch. When Eric was finished with his time in the special forces he joined Sal back in Alabama. Sal had started his own Attorney at Law business and never had a problem giving Eric money. Eric would do side jobs like paint or cut grass for Sal. Eric was happy. Sal was happy. Eric decided he needed an outlet and pursued a career as a professional wrestler and joined the XWF. Sal came too, but maintained his business as an attorney.
Eric Rex was a fighter. A survivor. He has been ever since he was put on this Earth. Now, he's lost. He doesn't exist. All that's left of Eric Rex is a strange monster named Elisha.
His one and only close friend, Sal Valencia, had betrayed him and his team The Academi for an unknown man that walked into their life in the XWF, Eli James IV. Eric never got clarity on why Sal would betray him like he did. Eric stood loyal with Sal and helped Sal stay alive. Sal loved to gamble and dealt with many feared guys, but Eric was there to help. Eric helped Sal a lot of the time. Eric saved Sal on the playground many years ago from a beating by Bradley. This friend would take all those years of friendship, put it in a toilet and flush it all away because of Eli James. The only reason Eric allowed Eli to be a partner was because he had the one thing Eric couldn't say no to: money. Eli is loaded with money. Eric loved that, and so did Sal. Eric would never betray Sal, though, for the green paper or copper coins. He would think Sal would do the same. No answers would drive a man crazy, and it did.
After Eric Rex was crucified by Eli James and Mystica, he vanished. He was in a rusted old truck with three men from the Congregation and Sal Valencia was the driver. The fearful, dreaded, dark barn that sits among The Village. A place even Elisha fears to go back to.
Dr. Baker doesn't know any of this. He'll find out soon enough, because Sal is at the Village still.
As Elisha lies in his cave with his Lacey doll, she talks to him through him.
"Oh, son, why are you upset? Why is my boy sad?
"N-N-Not upset. NO SAD. Hungry.
"Something else is bothering you. What is it?
"W-W-White coat. D-D-D-Doctor asked about E-E-Eric. He's dead. Deadeadead. No more. W-W-W-Why want to talk to h-h-him?
"Don't worry about that. You should focus on pleasing Eli after all he's done for you. Tomorrow night you fight a man he beat. It sure would make Eli smile if you beat Tony.
"T-T-Tony tough. I make Eli proud. And M-M-M-Mommy. I no go in c-c-c-casket. I come back in cave. I EAT! EAT! I eateateateateat after. Yes?
"Of course you can! We'll eat together. How about raw duck again?
"Yummy. Goodgoodgoodgood.
