'Extra, extra, read all about it'
'Here is the news'
'Facts'
'The truth'
In order to tell a story and to be able express oneself in open views one must be able to find facts and stick to the truth. Most journalists do it all the time, but we as wrestlers seem to want to abstain from the truth a bit. But the biggest most important thing when it comes to doing promo work before big matches is able to talk about your opponents in a well consise way. Most of the time trash talking is key. But you need to have facts and make sure those facts are correct because if they are not it makes you look like a bloody idiot.
To make sure I get my point across I have decided to sit down with XWF's number one Journalist and interview him for once.
"Welcome Steve, thank you for letting me interview you."
"It's a pleasure Mr Mastermind, it's not everyday the shoe is on the other foot so to speak."
"Let's get straight into it."
"Fire away, I'm ready."
"What is the biggest role of a journalist?"
"Well Mastermind, I'll put it this way. The biggest role of a journalist is to provide around 5 major characteristics."
"And what are those characteristics?"
"To tell the truth, to all ways have our facts correct, to be fair, to be accountable, and to be independent."
"5 characteristics to die for,"
"Oh of course,"
"So Steve. Let's start with 'Telling The Truth' why is that important? I know why, but re-emphize for those who are watching,"
"A Journalist’s first obligation is to the truth.
To make sure people have the most reliable, accurate facts put in front of them, so that they can come up with their own conclusions.
"That sounds so simplistic,"
"Because it so is, Mr Mastermind. It brings me to my next point about always having our FACTS correct."
"By all means take it away,"
"Facts and figures are always key to everything.
We always need to ensure that they have been checkedx then double checked, and then triple checked. Sometimes we need to have at least two or three people to collaborate the same thing in order to run the story."
"When we cannot corroborate information we should always say so."
"Would you say research is key to providing great facts and figures?"
"Oh of course, very key."
"So tell us, why Journalists have to be fair?"
"That's easy. Most stories have at least two sides. While there is no obligation to present every side in every piece, we as journalists should present stories that should be balanced and add context."
"But sometimes objectivity is not always possible, and may not always be desirable for example in cases of brutality or inhumanity. We need to have our readers or viewers trust us and be confident in our reporting."
"Again that sounds so simplistic. So explain now why you Accountability is key for a journalist?"
"That's easy. We need to be professional and responsible journalista. We have to have the ability to hold ourselves accountable. When we commit errors we must correct them straight away, and our expressions of regret must be sincere not cynical."
"We also need to continue to listen to the concerns of our audience. We may not change what readers or viewers write or say, but we will always provide remedies when we are unfair.
It's just that simple."
"That sounded very deep. So lastly tell us why Independence is the key?"
"Journalists must be independent voices; we should not act, formally or informally, on behalf of special interests whether political, corporate or cultural, or in my case sporting.
"We should always declare to our editors – or even the audience or any of our political affiliations, financial arrangements or other personal information that might constitute a conflict of interest. Which in my case favourite sporting teams, or favourite wrestler if I do have one."
"I think we learnt a lot about the key factors concerning Journalists or even people like us who use the media to talk about our opponents while doing promos. The 5 key factors are very much influential."
"I want to thank you Mr Sayors for explaining those 5 key points,"
"It was a pleasure being on the other side of an interview. I enjoyed it, but I think I'll stick to interviewing,"
I shook Steve's hand and we shared a laugh.
HAMPTON INN
TROPICANA
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA
UNITED STATES
The camera fades in to the Hotel Room of Mastermind. It finds sitting in front of the window overlooking the infamous Las Vegas. And what that opportunity brings.
He is given a signal that he is now live to the XWF Universe.
"We are here in the land of gambling, the big lights, the show girls, and everything that entails. Oh wait isn't this Tony Santos's world?
"I said I wouldn't talk about that side of Tony, so I won't. Because everyone who Tony has faced in the time he was Hart Champion, has brought this side of him up and now it's just fucking boring.
"The glitz, the glamour, the lights also remind us of Hollywood. How convenient, because this segway brings in Box Office Brian O'Haire and I have a major gripe with him.
"Promo 101. Get things right. Research. And know what you are actually talking about, because you sir, you know shit.
"I hoped you listen to my interview I done with Steve Sayers earlier when he went over the 5 major characteristics important not only to a journalist but us as wrestlers when it comes to promo work.
"Again I call that Promo 101.
"Repeat them with me Brian.....
"To tell the truth,
"To all ways have our facts correct
"To be fair,
"To be accountable, and
"To be independent.
"What's gotten me hot under the collar everyone must be asking? Oh I don't know. How about this comment Brian made in his first promo."
BOX OFFICE BRIAN O'HAIRE Said:Masterchef or whatever the hell your name is. Listen to me. CLEARLY you've accomplished a lot in your career here. A long title reign as the Hart champion, which is no mean feat.
[Mastermind chuckles but becomes serious again when he turns around and looks at the camera.
"So Brian you tried deflecting your stupidity early by calling me Masterchef. Well done, very clever of you...... not. Can you hear where you went wrong Brian, can you?
"I'm sure people who know me so well know where you went wrong and how you at least broke one of the five characteristics.
"Shall I help you out? You said that I had a long title reign as the Hart Champion!
"Wow did I now? A long title reign as the Hart Champion you say?
Gee I wonder when that was? Oh wait! I've never had a title reign with the Hart but I did with the Television Championship!!!
"That was a honest mistake right? Wrong oh it was so very, very wrong.
"You were lying.... wrong facts that's for sure...... you clearly didn't do any research.... you weren't fair, far from it. That's why I am holding you accountable for your screw up. And you weren't very independent.
"So you screwed up all five characteristics. Coming from someone who says he has Box Office experience, you should be very much ashamed of yourself.
"Hey Tony, your tag partner doesn't know what he's talking about. He's put you guys on the back foot by being made to look like fools because he is clearly a fool."
Mastermind smirks his infamous smirk.
"Now Ruby, my tag team partner for this second round. You spoke about respect and loyalty and blame.
"There's not many people who I respect among the XWF, I do respect a small number and they know who they hate. Plus I do respect our opponent Tony because of the way he defended the Hart Title for those months he was champion.
"I'm also not one to lay the blame game unless I really have to. But you I wouldn't because I know we really worked at beating Tony and his wouldn't have a clue what I'm talking about partner that is Shame Office Brian O'Haire.
"We will win together and we will lose together but I don't see that happening. But if by chance we do happen to lose there won't be the blame game. I'm not that type of person.
"So Tony, I really hope you are ready, and I know Brian is so letting you down.
"Ruby and I are so ready for the Semi Finals.
"So until Saturday, enjoy your last few days of Brian trying to make amends."
Mastermind gets up and walks off camera. The camera fades out.
