Challenger - Part 1 - Smoke - 09-08-2013 The scene fades in to a brilliant night sky. There are no clouds to mask the hundreds and thousands of stars that dot the sky, showcasing an array of stunning and remarkable constellations. A few lights travel across the black canvas. Are they stars? Helicopters? Visitors? It is not quite certain. It is quiet except for the distant wind. A couple of cars can be heard driving by, as the camera pans down to view a not so busy street in the middle of the night. Off shot, we can hear two people conversing. So, how many matches have you had now? A couple. About two or three. Nice, nice. How many have you won, exactly? Most of them, actually. Awesome. Y'know, I actually watched your first match. I was in the crowd. The pair walk into the shot to the right-side. They are on the pavement, enjoying a late-night walk together. They are both similar heights, with the both of them wearing a hoodie each. As they reach the centre of the shot, the camera moves with them, following where they go. Daniel shows a concerned look on his shadowed face. Oof... really? Edward throws his arm around his younger brother. Ah, don't worry man. You weren't that bad I guess. I do know your team won. I tell you, I must of looked like an idiot, standing up and cheering when you kneed that fat guy in the balls! Daniel shifts his body a little to make Ed's arm to fall off his shoulder. Rubbing his arm a little, he remarks quickly. Peter Gilmour, yeah. Ed rolls his eyes to shake off his brother's discomfort. Whatever his name is, you beat him and the rest of his guys, so all that's over right. Not really... Daniel's clearly troubled at this point. Edward stops and nudges him on the shoulder to signal him to stop as well. He obliges, and the camera halts too. What do you mean by that? Are you alright, is something up? Daniel hesitates for a sec before speaking. You know my team from that night, right? Well, because of the result of that match I'll be in for a title shot for the X-Treme Championship. It's, like, the biggest prize here. Thing is, along with the champion, I have to face and beat my team in a 6-Way Elimination X-Treme Rules match. It's only really now dawned on me how quickly it's come around the corner, and all things considered it's kind of bugging me. I'm getting a little paranoid when I sleep because I realise how big this is for me, but to have to face everyone I fought with before and beat them all. I don't want to waste this opportunity because of a stupid mistake. Simply put, I'm worrying about it. No need. I know how much it means to you and I know you'll do just well. I know you'll give them hell, and even if you don't walk out champion, you'll probably make so much of an impression that they'll have to give you another shot. Not true. This business is nothing like the WWE or TNA or whatever. You get one shot and if you don't deliver, you're sent to the back of the queue, which gets longer, and longer... and longer. Daniel's gaze drifts away and he instead looks down onto the floor. Edward maintains his posture, and after a couple of seconds shared silence, he speaks. Well, if worse goes to worst then I'll be there for you. At ringside, I promise. Hell, if you need any help, just hook me up and I'll come and kick some ass for you. It's X-Treme Rules, that means there's nothing stopping me from intervening is there? Edward starts walking again, walking past the still stationary Daniel. But that's just the thing. I don't want you there. At this point, Edward had walked a few paces away. He stopped at Daniel's statement. Turning around to look at his brother's still turned back, Daniel continues to speak. To be able to have this chance so early in my career is a god-send, trust me. As such, I don't want anything to distract me. With you at ringside, hell, even there at all, I'm worried that my conscience will get the better of me, and I might blunder over a couple of stupid mistakes. If I can help it, I don't want to have anything that could hinder me in any way. A simple slip-up can cost me the match in more ways than one. I'm sorry, it's my fault, not your's. Edward slowly turns around. His expression is neutral, and does not waver. He pouts his lips and slightly shakes his head. Unbelievable. Last time I was here you wanted my full support moving forward in your wrestling career. But now that I've opened up to you you want to turn me down for the sake of 'concentrating'? Fuck you! I didn't fly all the way out here, extend my hotel stay and buy tickets with my own money just to have you throw it back in my face and tell me that I'm 'not allowed' or whatever. I don't care what you say, I'm going. And with that he turns to leave, but Daniel runs up to him and grabs his shoulder, causing him to stop once more. I know I wanted your support. I do. And now I know that I have it, I know I'll work my ass of on Wednesday. But if you are there I'll walk in with the mindset to not disappoint you, and I know I'd be too caught up by that I wouldn't be able to think straight. Daniel releases his hand off of his brother's shoulder and sighs. You are two years older than I am, and because of that we've been through so much, and we went through it together. You had the obvious head-start to break out into the world and become your own man. But me? I've finally reached at that point in my life. The point where I can successfully look after myself and have to worry about my concerns above all. This is my new life. I'm sure you can understand that for the most part I want to do things on my own, and if you're there still then I'm never going to become what I want to, I will just remain what I was, and then what's the point of all this? What's the point of moving here and putting my body on the line, all for chances like this? This match is the pinnacle of my early wrestling career. I just want to get it right. I just don't want to screw it up. An impression is all I need, but if I walk away the Champion, who knows what that will result in? I know you know how much this means to me. And I hope you realise that while your support is important, I need to do things on my own from now on. They just stood there. In silence. The air stirred and a few cars drove past, with the in-betweens leaving distant echoes and gusts of wind. Off-shot trees can be heard swaying in the breeze, the leaves meshing in a natural instrument of serenity and entanglement. Who are you facing on Wednesday? Cam Lang, Paradoxica, Jason E Smith, Christine Nash and the champion Angelus... Why? Edward lets out a small laugh. Hahah, nothing. He leaves, and this time, Daniel chooses not to stop him. Instead, he kicks up his heels and walks off in the opposite direction. |
