Question about reusing roleplays. - Minxs - 09-01-2013

This question has kinda been eating at me for a while...and it might seem like a stupid question but I know some places have an issue with the writer using roleplays from other places that the writer themselfs have written...

I was just wondering if that's going to be a no-no or if you guys are going to let that slide. I have a lot of roleplays that I have for Micah and Zak that I would like to use again and build off since they fit so well with the current mindset of the characters and some of the storylines that they are in.

So if someone could get back to me about that...that would be awesome. I just want to know before I ever post a match roleplay that has a lot of some of my older ones.

I can easily provide my handle from Aimoo that most of my roleplays are under and even Ally has read almost all of them from my old account which was deleted.

There's not technically a rule that specifies you can't do that, but if we start doing that I can bring back my Weapon:Ashen character and give him a several month run fueled entirely by my old material as him. I think I have 70+ RPs saved somewhere.

Here's the best way to think about things of this nature... if you are wondering if it's ok for you to do something, just multiply it and pretend everybody was doing it. What picture do you see in your mind if that happens? Is it a good one?

My best advice is to use old material sparingly. It's only going to hurt you if all of your material is all pre-written because that means it will be absent of any XWF relevance, which is a negative in most judges' minds. There's nothing wrong with maybe recycling some pieces on occasion, but judges are going to be able to sense if you pasted a bunch of old material or if you actually are RPing for the match you're booked in... and if they sense that, it will hurt your performance that week.

The way that I look at it is that, most likely, old material won't be applicable to your current feud. However, even if it is, it's a shortcut. Don't do it. I recommend just creating new stuff. It's better for your character and for the fed.

Question about reusing roleplays. - Minxs - 09-01-2013

It's not that I would just change the names but take some of the locations and themes and manipulating them into current feuds. I mean, I have one roleplay called One Stray Shot that has a lot of what I want to write for Zak's future match since it's holding the feel of a sociopath and that's what Zak is. I just wanted to make sure because if I have Zak say something that Micah said in the Original and someone points it out and throws a fit then I won't use it. It's just that I get a lot of ideas on how I could change the originals, making it totally new while still holding the original or intensifying the feelings. Again, using One Stray Shot, the original emotion is depression and ends with Micah leading people to believe she blew her head off.

If I were to change it for Zak, I could keep the depression feel there but morph it into something so insane and twisted that it would sound nothing like the original but keep some of the originals intended themes.

but...this is good. I can try to come up with something new for each but just bare with me because there will be no fucking way in hell that any of the new material will reach the level of most of the people I will go up against. Mainly, because I'm not sure what's all censored. By no way am I complaining, I'm just making sure I keep my ass covered before my first match when I get back from recovery.

Question about reusing roleplays. - Giovanni Ferrari - 09-01-2013

Yeah IMO you should never recycle old rps. That's just taking the easy way out and it doesn't really show your opponent the respect, or time they deserve.

As far as what's censored in the fed, there's really nothing that's censored. Warfare used to be considered the 'rated' show. Meaning cuss words needed to be censored, or just not used and violence needed to be toned down quite a bit. However, that rule was removed when I took over the role as co-general manager.

Having a show that was rated seemed to make more sense when Shove It, was happening every week and was the all out crazed anything goes show, with 12 ft tall clansman and panda bears falling from the sky and Madness was the middle ground. Since Shove It turned into a bi-weekly/guest GM sort of thing, the 'rated' show rule for Warfare was dropped. Now the need for censoring doesn't really apply. Swearing and violence is allowed on both Madness and Warfare. Although if you're going to go into detailed descriptions of hate crimes while slandering races, eating fetuses and fucking corpses.....that rp probably should be saved for an episode of Shove It.

I hope that clears it up for you, lol. Smile

Question about reusing roleplays. - Casey Jones - 09-02-2013

Okay, on this subject, a few weeks ago I wrote an RP for a match that was overlooked, could I repost that and use it?

Question about reusing roleplays. - Lightning - 09-02-2013

See the thing about reusing old material, its like plagiarism's little brother. He isn't really doing anything wrong, but its because he doesn't know better. I'm not saying using your old stuff to have a baseline is a bad thing, but its out of place here. When you wrote your old stuff, people knew the person already. Your character is now to us, so it should be treated like your the new kid in school. We know nothing about the you from the old school, just the new kid in front of us. I f you start using your "old work", who's to say you won't graduate to other people's work? Jsut so you know, if you do, someone WILL catch it. Read the #1 conteders match from Shove-It on the results board. Ion was caught cheating for a second time, and it really pissed off all of us. So to be safe I will say this...

JUST DON'T DO IT.

I'm sure someone read it. Even though you wrote it here, I'd just write soemthing new. I think it would be easier too since if you just copy the post, it will hurt your rating with the GMs as fsr as your performance since it was already written once for a different situation.

If I remember right, the RP mistakenly never got counted toward your match that week, correct? In the rare event that something on our end caused your work to go uncredited, then yes, you're more than welcome to re-post it so you can get credit for it in a future match. I'd also suggest deleting the old post.

To others reading this, please keep in mind you'd HAVE to confirm with management that your RP actually didn't get counted, which again, is extremely rare and only would happen by mistake. That way if a guest judge tells us your work looks familiar or recycled, we can let them know to count it at full strength.

Question about reusing roleplays. - John Msdison 2.Faggot - 09-02-2013

If I can find your work somewhere other than XWF then I am not counting it as original material and I will DQ the character. We've caught people in the past, and I'm sure we'll catch more in the future. It's easier to spot than you'd think. Sometimes I'll copy and paste a line out of someone's RP just as a random check.

There are two reasons I don't like recycled content. For one, there's no way to confirm that you are the original author. And second, it's unfair that you get to copy and paste something in 5 minutes while your opponent sits down and goes through the tedious process of coming up with fresh material. It's lazy and unfair to your competition.

Question about reusing roleplays. - Sincere Lee Wild - 09-03-2013

Based on personal experience do not do it. Think of something fresh for your opponents because its not fair they sit and busy their ass for your match while you just copy and paste and change a few details. I have done it an it was embarrassing when I was called out on it.

Yes this is exactly what happened. He RP'd... I missed it. Counted it as a no-show. Posted that part of the results, went back to reading some RPs and then caught my fuck up. Its also part of what lead me to taking a week off from show writing. Most people know that I want everything right, every time.

I have no problem whatsoever if you want to re-post it, Casey.

Furthermore, I have wiped that loss out of the record books. It never happened.

Question about reusing roleplays. - Archie Lawson - 09-07-2013

Fuck Re-using old stuff. I have hundereds of roleplays saved on my laptop but where's the fun in reusing. I would rather lose due to lack of time or whatever than just editing old stuff to make it relevant.

Question about reusing roleplays. - Rain - 09-07-2013

... I know her and I haven't seen eye to eye...

But you guys were seriously harsh on Micah.

She tried to be as absolutely nice, kind, and polite about it as she could, yet a lot of you cussed at her...

... this is why I wanted to be friends with her in the first place...

... I honestly don't see the harm, as far as the way she explained it. She SAID she could prove it was hers, and she even said Alex had read them, so you people saying she couldn't prove it was hers... you're mistaken.

Micah, I know you don't care much for me at the moment... but I totally get where you're coming from.

And now I remember why I took that hiatus from e-fedding...

Quit bitching and whining Rayne seriously.

No one was harsh, rayne. We gave her answers and explained why.

rayne- Remember your 'stupid ass post' rule that you need to follow from here on.

Original, XWF produced work only, guys. Its that simple!

Closed and have fun!
