Analyzing Swift Ion's Worth to XWF - Swift Ion - 06-24-2013 Swift Ion, a talented but replaceable high-flyer, can be a valuable cog in the XWF machine if used properly. Like "Jumping" Jim Brunzell before him, Ion can be a solid addition to the midcard and tag team division. Ion's greatest attribute is his athleticism, but he offers little else. Only in the rarest cases does XWF find a superstar as talented as John Madison or CM Punk. The rest of the roster can contribute, though. You don't need a band full of frontmen anyway. Men like Ion are the bass players of the XWF, important and often underappreciated. Ion's strength is providing entertaining matches. Like many of the cruiserweights did for WCW, Iom gives XWF a good match just about every night he's asked to perform. For example, take his 2013 bout with JTC on Madness. Against JTC, he provides a burst of physical magic, flipping around the ring and over his opponent in exciting fashion. Ion's work is fast-paced. He's fluid, thrilling at times and one of XWF's best leapers. XWF doesn't need to write this guy a story. There is no need for buildup. Those things would heighten these encounters, but Ion can entertain with just his legs. The company needs matches like these, clashes that lead into the main event. WWE needs matches to fill its ever-growing programming schedule. In that way, Ion is the chips and salsa before the fajitas arrive. You can't just eat chips for dinner, but they make the meal as a whole better. Beyond his ring ability, his look probably appeals to the hipster teenage wrestling fan. Other than that, Ion can easily blend into the mass of men and women that is the XWF roster. He doesn't have elite-level charisma or a stand-out character. In an interview about his Battle Royal match, he does provide things memorable. Ion catches less of our attention. To utilize his strengths and cover his deficiencies, XWF should keep Ion as a regular member of the tag team division. As another High-Flyer's partner and as a member of a stable, Ion will be at his best. In this situation, there's no need to lean on him to provide star power, character or promo skills. Ion's success will largely depend on finding him the right partner. As an upper-midcard performer or as a champion, Ion is of little value. He's just not well-rounded enough to pull off those positions. Ion can be allied with someone new. This is how to make Ion a solid part of XWF's core and recent signees can all provide the acrobatics that Ion does. In a way, the South African is an interchangeable part. Still, XWF needs men like Ion to fill Battle Royal slots, to give the company booking options and to provide variety. Ion can handle all of those duties. |
