64 Degrees and Cloudy. - Nico LaVey - 08-06-2016

"Get down here, your food is getting cold!"

As Ferris hears his mother calling from downstairs, he's sitting over his desk, crying, knowing the verbal abuse that's waiting for him.

"And bring your report card with you."

He looks up into his computer screen and sees his reflection before wiping the tears off his face and starting to head downstairs. He sits at the table and his mom notices his red eyes.

"Why are your eyes red?"

"Oh, uhhh, I just used eye drops."

"Really? Are you sure it's not because you already know I'll be disappointed? Show me your report card."

Ferris begrudgingly hands her the pamphlet, and as she looks over it, she makes disappointed sounding noises, muttering "well" and "hmm" in a condescending fashion.

"Well, this is what I expected. Only one A-Plus and a B in Science? Well, Harvard would laugh right in your face if you sent this pathetic thing to them."

She throws the card at Ferris.

"No dinner or breakfast for a week. You want to be a useless slob like this, you don't get food."

Ferris nods and goes back upstairs, mentally cursing her out as he closes the door behind him. This time, he doesn't cry. He just sits at the door and stays there for a solid three hours before getting up and sitting at his computer. It was times like now that Ferris could rely on music. When all else in the world feels terrible and pointless, he can always go on YouTube and listen to something new. Ferris gets on YouTube, thinks for a minute, types in "grunge", and enjoys a genre he's never listened to before.

After going through some Soundgarden and Nirvana, he comes across a little bit of Pearl Jam, and he hears the song "Jeremy" for the very first time.

"At home, drawing pictures, of mountain tops, with him on top. Lemon yellow sun, arms raised in a V, and the dead lay, in pools of maroon below."

Ferris listens to this song at least 40 more times, forgetting to sleep that night. Before he heads off to school early, he downloads the song onto this phone and puts it on loop all day. He arrives at the school early to get breakfast, still listening to Jeremy. He goes through the first few periods to get to lunch, still listening to Jeremy. He walks home from school listening to Jeremy. He goes on to listen to nothing but this song for 6 days.

On the seventh night, Ferris puts down the headphones for a second to look up where to buy guns.

"I feel like you're way too hard on Ferris, Janet."

Ferris, his mother, and their therapist all sit around the dining room table as they hear the same thing they've been hearing for years now.

"If I'm too hard, why is he still such a failure?"

"Janet, I don't understand how passing grades make him a failure."

"Passing? So, I should just let a B go unpunished?"

"...yes. Harvard would still gladly accept people with a single B grade. I don't think you understand just how good of a student Ferris here is."

"I don't care! A B is a B and an A is an A! If he isn't the best in school, why even go? He might as well go do drugs instead of learn."

"School isn't a competition, Janet! If he does well, he's doing well. Remember that this stems from you relationship with your father. He wanted the absolute best from you, even if it was something you didn't want to do. Ferris wants to do well, and he is! Just stop and try to remember that the next time you get frustrated with him. He's doing more than well enough to enter Harvard. Our time is up. If things don't improve by next week, I'm calling CPS."

The therapist leaves quickly, a look of disgust on his face. As soon as he close the door, Janet starts slapping Ferris until he falls out of his chair and onto the ground in a ball trying to protect himself. When Janet is done, she spits on Ferris.

"I wish you would just die."

She walks past him and he slowly starts to get up, making sure she really is gone. This has been going on since 2nd Grade.

A week later, Ferris comes downstairs, walks outside and checks behind a bush in the front yard. His guns have arrived. He goes back inside, makes a cup of coffee, and waits at the dining room table for his mother. She comes downstairs, about to leave for work.

"Oh, I see you're finally just going to stay home and be worthless, huh? Better than doing it at school."

She opens up a cabinet and looks in the reflection of a bottle to see Ferris quickly approaching her with a knife.

Ferris walks to school like normal, hood down and backpack on only one arm. As he walks, he takes out his phone and dials 911.

"Hi, there has been a brutal murder at 534 West Watercress Road. I killed my mother and disemboweled her before stomping on her skull. I'm three quarters of the way to my school. I have an assault rifle in my backpack that I obtained illegally off the internet. Come and stop me."

Ferris hangs up and walks to his school, where he stands out front for a minute. People stare and point at him as he stands in the middle of the doorway. A boy bumps into him hard on purpose, saying "oops" before walking past him. He stops as he hears a zipping noise, followed by screams, the last sound he ever hears.

Ferris starts playing Jeremy again before shooting as many people as the hallway as he can. He gets a good majority of them for someone who's never used a gun before. He goes into each room, shooting up kids he's never even met before moving onto the next room. He repeats this for every room in the hallway before looking in the library. He sees people huddled up between the rows of books at the far end with desks blocking them off. He hears some kids laughing silently, not taking the matter seriously. He takes a grenade out of his bag at throws it all the way into the back of the room. He hears a sudden panic before seeing blood splatter onto the ceiling. He then goes to each desk and opens fire, clearing the library. He then grabs a matchbook, lights a single match without removing it, and folds it back into place before putting it on top of a book on one of the shelves.

Ferris exits the library and then moves onto a few other rooms, shooting the people inside and going to the next. Before moving on again, he sprays lighter fluid onto the ground, connecting all of the rooms. Ferris lights it and runs to the gym. He enters, successfully empties his clip at the people inside, and uses two more bottle of lighter fluid to light a sort of wall of fire behind him. He sits down in front of the fire and waits with a pistol to his head. He continues to listen to Jeremy on his phone, smiling, in a way, thanking the song for what it made him do. A single tear rolls down his face as the song begins to end. The police enter the gym, yelling at Ferris with a bullhorn to put his weapon down. He opens his eyes to see them before pulling the trigger.
