well I'm here - TheXtremist"Bryce" - 03-03-2013 let's just cut to the chase, some of you know me from the old xwf site and some of you I have no idea if I know you or not, but irregardless, hi and thank you from welcoming me home well I'm here - John Msdison 2.Faggot - 03-03-2013 Welcome back. Just chill and I think you'll have a good time. well I'm here - jpcorino - 03-03-2013 Regardless is sufficient enough! well I'm here - C Y R E N - 03-03-2013 ***ALERT ALERT ALERT*** THERE IS A GRAMMAR NAZI IN THE BUILDING! Irregardless and Regardless are both equally acceptable. They are absolutely interchangeable. It's simply a matter of colloquial taste which word is used on a personal case-by-case basis. well I'm here - jpcorino - 03-03-2013 It is, in itself, a one word double negative. well I'm here - "Loverboy" Vinnie Lane - 03-04-2013 Grammar Nazi enters the room. I believe Corino is right. "Regardless" is already the contrast of "regard" so irregardless becomes the double negative that some people might consider acceptable but an old school English enthusiast usually would not. Originally it was not acceptable as it's an unnecessary double negative that almost NEVER means the thing people think it does when they use it in a sentence (because they're thinking it means regardless)... Even if we agreed it's an acceptable word, it gets used wrong 99% of the time if we accept it because the way most people use it would be similar to claiming "irresponsible" means the same thing as "responsible." Another point I always enjoy hearing about is how someone can claim "conversate" is acceptable when originally it was not and only should be stated as "converse." Conversate sounds better in rap songs though... "conversate for a few, cuz in a few, we gun do, what we came to do... ain't that right boo? ...Truuuue" - Anyone know the song? ![]() Grammar Nazi exits with a banana in hand, regardless of whether you like watching bananas get eaten by Sgt. Doakes. well I'm here - jpcorino - 03-04-2013 Not the exact song off the top of my head but it's Notorious BIG! well I'm here - Mister Mystery 17 31707 1 - 03-04-2013 Welcome back whoever you are. well I'm here - C Y R E N - 03-04-2013 The origin of irregardless is not known for certain, but the speculation among references is that it may be a blend, or portmanteau word, of irrespective and regardless, both of which are commonly accepted standard English words. By blending these words, a word is created whose meaning is not predictable from the meanings of its constituent morphemes. Since the prefix ir- means "not" (as it does with irrespective), and the suffix -less means "without", the word irregardless could therefore be expected to have the meaning "in regard to", instead of being merely a synonym of regardless. According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), Irregardless was first acknowledged in 1912 by the Wentworth American Dialect Dictionary as originating from western Indiana,[2] though the word was in use in South Carolina before Indiana became a territory. [1] The usage dispute over irregardless was such that, in 1923, Literary Digest published an article titled "Is There Such a Word as Irregardless in the English Language?". The OED goes on to explain the word is primarily a North American colloquialism.[2] ~ God (Wikipedia)
***ALERT ALERT ALERT*** THERE IS A GRAMMAR NAZI IN THE BUILDING! Irregardless and Regardless are both equally acceptable. They are absolutely interchangeable. It's simply a matter of colloquial taste which word is used on a personal case-by-case basis. QFT. I disagree with what you say but IRREGARDLESS of that, I will defend to the death your right to say it! In conclusion, it's a 'skeevy' word that is acceptable as a colloquialism. This draws a funny line. It is not an acceptable formal word for literature. However, we are trying to convey a sense of 'speech' when we are roleplaying, so in and of itself, we're creating a literary paradox. To be more 'in line' with traditional literature we would distance ourselves from the creative aspect of certain characters. In the end, in the way in which it was originally used, I concede. It was incorrect in the context but it's not a word that should be abolished entirely - it does serve it's use! I submit that the word is so widely used in error that the usage itself redefines the identity of the very word due to the evolving nature of language. It's here to stay. well I'm here - John Msdison 2.Faggot - 03-04-2013 god hes such a nazi well I'm here - C Y R E N - 03-04-2013 And now if ya'll(sic), wanna get real technical about words, I'm damn tired of EVERYONE on God's green earth saying the word 'Ideal' or 'idear', which I don't believe is a word, in place of the word, 'Idea.' well I'm here - TheXtremist"Bryce" - 03-04-2013 Just out of curiousity, how did this turn into a conversation about grammar -reads the original post about it- Oh, no comment then, secondly I remember last time I was here Gilmour was being extremely immature and attempted to get me into a match against him on a show, which, if I recall right, when I challenged him he never accepted RE: well I'm here - Unknown Soldier - 03-04-2013 (03-04-2013, 07:58 PM)TheXtremist"Bryce Said: Just out of curiousity, how did this turn into a conversation about grammar If I recall you tried to force him to enter a "Loser Leaves XWF" match which he NEVER wanted to agree to in the first place. Which makes perfect sense considering he's been here RPing non stop and massively improving. December Star of the Month and now the Tag Team Champion. It appeared to me that YOU were the immature one who attempted to entice OUTSIDE roster members to 'cheer on' a Dark Shadow vs. Peter Gilmour match with the "Loser Leaves" stipulation. Why would Gilmour agree to that when he wants to stay in the XWF and be successful. You left anyways right? So what good would the stipulation be for you? Stop trying to start drama with Gilmour, because if your intention is to start OOC drama and not rp like your known for, then don't waste our time here. XWF is for people who WANT to rp like Gilmour. well I'm here - TheXtremist"Bryce" - 03-04-2013 Trust me, in the ooc drama sense, I promiss I have changed, however in the sense of plans to debut a tag team I have made a challenge, I seem a little forward I will edit it RE: well I'm here - C Y R E N - 03-04-2013 (03-04-2013, 08:19 PM)Unknown Soldier Said:(03-04-2013, 07:58 PM)TheXtremist"Bryce Said: Just out of curiousity, how did this turn into a conversation about grammar Frush Baba. well I'm here - Unknown Soldier - 03-04-2013 Do whatever you want In Character. However, mentioning the past OOC and saying that Gilmour was 'immature' is unwarranted and unnecessary because you KNOW it will get a reaction from Peter. well I'm here - C Y R E N - 03-04-2013 I don't think he meant much by it. Everybody chill out. well I'm here - TheXtremist"Bryce" - 03-04-2013 Honestly, I never came here to cause ooc drama though, that kind of just happened. If ![]() well I'm here - KnightMask - 03-04-2013 Wow, XWF is that old? Did any of you guys ever RP in the PCW? Aka, Primetime Championship Wrestling? I'd say who I was there, but things got controversial, so I shan't. well I'm here - TheXtremist"Bryce" - 03-04-2013 Nope, I don't even think I was a e-fedder then, I am, as most of these guys are aware of, from the xwf reboot era, joined April 10th, 2011 when I accidently stumbled apon this place (I kind of thought e-fedding was like an online virtural realitty game type, with the xwf being like a league off of it, boy was I wrong) RE: well I'm here - Wallace Witasick - 03-04-2013 (03-04-2013, 08:40 PM)KnightMask Said: Wow, XWF is that old?
