My Fathers Past: Part II - RP 2 - Sebastian Duke - 02-18-2014

Friday, February 14, 2014 – 6:16 AM EST – The Compound – Old Saybrook, Connecticut

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “The woman. The mother of the boy in the picture. Whatever happened to her?”

ASMODEUS: “I'm not sure, son. She's off the grid. She sent me pictures every few months for years. Until they suddenly stopped. She may be still alive. She may be dead. I don't know. It's too painful to think about.”

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “Did you love her?”

ASMODEUS: “I could have. Unfortunately, our romance only lasted a few weeks. We'd met at a coffee shop. It was innocent at first. Two lonely people seeking the company of another just to chat. She was quite a lovely woman. Very good looking, intelligent, extremely charming.”

We enter the front doors of the Compound.

ASMODEUS: “These meeting we had just to chat and have company took on a different atmosphere.”

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “She was married.”

ASMODEUS: “Yes. She told me some things about him. He was not a very kind man, Sebastian.”

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “I know.”

We begin to ascend the stone spiral staircase that leads to the living quarters on the floor above us. Most of the Illuminatus Brotherhood sleeps in one large room. I have my private quarters. Jacob and Matthew have theirs. My apprentice has his.

ASMODEUS: “I wanted to take her away from him. I suppose I did love her. Maybe even deeply.”

I stay silent as he talks. It's an achievement to get him to talk about what is in his heart. If you can get him to do so, you let him keep talking.

ASMODEUS: “I suppose it's all for that better though.”

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “Why's that?”

ASMODEUS: “I have a low tolerance for outsiders, Sebastian. Most of those within the Illuminatus take years in order to be entrusted with secrets of our existence. I'm afraid, that in all likelihood, had her and I ran off together, she might have had to die, son.”

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “Not necessarily.”

We reach the top of the stairs and come to a stop in the corridor just outside the door to my own living quarters.

ASMODEUS: “Your mother? Linn? Caitlyn? Do you see the pattern?”

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “I understand what you're saying, Dad. What I'm trying to say is, that maybe we go about that all wrong. Maybe we don't have to end the lives of every woman we ever give a shit about.”

He stays quiet for the moment.

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “What I mean is, if we would have taught them, as we pulled back the veil of secrecy, maybe all of them would still be alive. Love is a powerful thing. Maybe the most powerful. It causes all kinds of things to happen, Dad. If its true, and real, nothing that we do privately, can affect how they feel.”

ASMODEUS: “Do you think Caitlyn would have accepted you the way you are? Do you think she would have agreed to Thaddeus not being raised Catholic?”

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “It's hard to say.”

ASMODEUS: “Is it, Sebastian?”

We begin to proceed down the hallway toward my apprentices living quarters.

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “We never really gave any of them a chance to accept us. We just assumed they wouldn't. If they're informed, little by little of what we do and why, then maybe we would be able to have that peace and love in our lives.

“Men like us, Dad, need that balance. We do things that would be considered evil in most of the world. That does prey on our minds. It makes us cold and uncaring. When in reality, we do have emotions and hearts within our bodies.

“What we're doing with the Catholic Church is all for a good cause. If we teach them why it's a good cause, things may turn out differently.”

We reach the door to my apprentices room and come to a stop.

ASMODEUS: “What you're saying makes sense. I suspect though, you're wrong. Through the eyes of the world, there is a difference between good and evil. Darkness and light. Black and white. No one ever realizes that there is a gray area also. That gray area, Sebastian, is where we reside.

“Most will never accept that.”

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “True enough. The question is, how do you know? How do you truly know, until you give one person a chance?”

Silence.

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “You're getting older, Dad. One day, when you succumb to death like we all eventually will, do you really want to do it alone?”

More silence as he ponders.

ASMODEUS: “Son, I will not be alone. I suppose when the day of my death arrives, I will be surrounded by you, Thaddeus, and the rest of the Illuminatus. I will not die alone.”

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “Are you trying to tell me that the Illuminatus is in some way a replacement for a connection of the heart?”

Again, more silence. This time though, he's showing agitation.

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “There is nothing I wouldn't give to be able to turn back the hands of time. Turn them back to when I first met Caitlyn. And start all over again. Let her in, little by little, teach her why we do what we do. In my heart, I believe she'd still be here.

“She'd be my Queen of Darkness.

“And raise my son.

“The future King of the Illuminatus.”

I leave it our conversation there, as I turn the handle to my apprentices room and enter. The masked man sits on the floor in the corner. His arms rest on his knees.

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “Hello, Eric.”

ERIC NIGEL MARTIN: “Good morning, my Master.”

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “Will you do something for me, Eric?”

ERIC NIGEL MARTIN: “Of course. Anything.”

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “Will you remove your mask?”

Eric hesitates at first, then begins to remove it.

ASMODEUS: “Why does he....”

Eric's mask is in his hand. Whatever Asmodeus was about to ask ends up stifled as he takes in the face beneath the mask.

ASMODEUS: “How is that possible?”

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “There's more to this story than you realize. He's not who you think he is.”

I hand him the photograph that I continued to hold throughout our walk and talk. He places the photo back in his pocket.

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “I brought that for a reason. Look at it and tell me what you see.”

ASMODEUS: “I've looked at that picture a million times over the years, Sebastian. I think I know it well.”

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “Just do it.”

He pulls out the photograph. He stares at it intensely for several seconds. His eyes squint, then open. He slowly looks away from the picture and over to Eric. When he does so, his eyes grow wide.

ASMODEUS: “Ohhh my god damn!”

Asmodeus stumbles backwards and hits the wall. Both Eric and I jump to help him.

ASMODEUS: “I'm okay, I'm okay.”

He rights himself, then sits down on the bed.

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “Now you know why I went out and found myself an apprentice.”

ASMODEUS: “It can't be.”

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “It is, Dad.

“C'mon, lets leave Eric be for now.”

Asmodeus is hesitant to leave. Eric places the mask back upon his face. I shut the door behind me and Asmodeus hits the floor on his knees. Tears begin to roll down his face.

ASMODEUS: “He's here.”

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “That, he is.”

ASMODEUS: “I'd hoped to one day meet him. To know him. To love him as I love you, son.”

I give him a minute to regain his composure.

ASMODEUS: “Is that really him?”

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “Yes.”

ASMODEUS: “How? Why?”

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “We'll get to that eventually.”

ASMODEUS: “Is his mother still alive?”

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “I don't know.”

I help him off the floor.

ASMODEUS: “This is the greatest thing you could have ever done for me.”

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “What about the Cardinal?”

ASMODEUS: “That's different.”

SEBASTIAN DUKE: “I suppose it is.”

Eric is my fathers son. My half-brother. My father considers this a gift. I consider it a strategic strike against the Xtreme Wrestling Federation and all of those that are against the Black Circle. Eric is Enigma. Enigma is...
