Chapter Six

The metal of the trowel clicks against the flimsy drywall, the last piece of plaster filling up the smallest remnant of the wall with its beige hue. Dropping the stained metal instrument to the ground, Anthony looks on at his handiwork with a smile, before turning away to see Mani taking a small washcloth to his, wiping away the excess material and placing both carefully on the ground from whence they came. Snorting out laughter, he gives a sarcastic round of applause to his comrade, who stares at him in contempt.

"Wow man, wiping down the shit?" he begins, stifling back the laughter he didn't quite get out before starting. "You make it seem like we're going to need it again!"

"Knowing you, we are." No laughter, just a straightforward glare, looking through the man.

"Have you seen this fuckin' wall? It is soild! I'm love to see one of those creepy shits come through this motherfucker!" Anthony exclaims showing the wall he spent all of fifteen minutes patching up as if he had painted a masterpiece.

"Last I checked; it was you who broke it in the first place."

"Fuck you man, you've been a buzzkill ever since you got here!" he declared, shooting a glare of his own back at the man in the room with him. "What the fuck is your problem, man?"

"Everything! Everything is my God damned problem, Anthony! Can't you see what's happening here?" wiping away a tear that formed in the deepest reaches of his tear duct and flinging it onto the floor, he balls his hand into a fist and stomps over to his friend. "Take a look around you. Was this your plan?"

A look of fear comes across Anthony's face, and he takes a defensive pose, eyes fixed on the man approaching him.

"What, what the fuck are you on about?"

He takes a swing at Mani, who grabs his fist and uses it to pull him for a punch of his own. Dropping to his knees, and once the grip on his hand is released, flat on the ground, he picks his head up slowly, staring up at the man standing over him.

"This. The building that we're in, hiding from everything that this town can throw at us! Was this what you had in mind?"

Then, from neither of the two men, a low pitched laugh bursts through the doors, shattering the glass which forms in piles on the ground beside their former frames.

"Does it matter if he knew?" a cold, low pitched rumble begins, dropping the knot in Mani's throat down to his stomach. "You're here now, aren't you?"

"What do you want with us?!" both Anthony and Mani shout in unison, to which the voice laughs the same, sickening sneer. With a slow, pulse pounding creak, one of the floorboards raises from its resting place, free from its bounds. Floating above its former position, it launches straight at Mani, clobbering him and leaving him beside his ally on the floor.

"You think you're special? Neither of you are special!"

"Then, why are you doing this to us?" Mani pleads, interlocking his fingers and holding them up to the sky. "Please, God. Have mercy on us..."

"God? God?! Adorable, kid. He can't hear you now, though. Too bad, too bad..." The winds pick up, whisking and whirling around, rattling the stop signs and tossing pebbles at the pair though the broken display window.

"I'll be seeing you!"

Just like that, the low rumble disappears, the winds stop dead in their tracks. Sitting up, both men scramble back to their feet. Another voice can be heard now, more like a chorus of a thousand angry voices chanting in unison an angered growl. Looking out into the night, the two can see slight movement all around. Turning the flashlight around to see, Mani instantly regrets the action.

A thousand angry, crawling beasts inching their way to where they stood like sitting ducks, sheep to the slaughter, and fish out of water. Out the corner of his eye, Anthony sees something that very well could save their lives.

"Run!" he screams, making a break for the back door, whose silvery handle sticks out like a sore thumb. Pulling as hard as he can on the door, he screams and curses when he can't get it to open. "God fucking dammit, there's always a catch, isn't there?"

"Have you tried pushing it?"

"Of course I tried that," he begins, actually doing that this time. The door swings open, revealing to the two an alleyway that goes on out of their view. "Would you look at that! It just needed some loosening is all!"

"Whatever..." Mani stated, walking as cool, calm and collected as he could through the opening. Looking around, he keeps his eyes peeled for the slightest twitch, unsure of what he'd do even if were one to occur.

On the contrary, Anthony saunters through to the outside, paying little attention to anything, except for what's explicitly in front of him.

"Yeah, motherfucker! We did it!"

"Are you sure about that?"

"Hell yeah! Look around you, do you see anything?" laughing, he takes a few steps further.

And then, a skeleton popped out. Wrapping its bony fingers around his throat, it hisses at its captive, while he screamed, thrashed, and fought with all his might.

"Mani! A little help here?"

"There's always something, isn't there?"

Oh, how right Mani was, and how he didn't even know this yet.
