The scene opens to a very upscale bar, where the song you hear now is being sung by a woman on a stage. The people around the bar are all having a good time, chatting to one another, having a laugh and spilling the occassional drink. Everything seems in order until a young couple out the back of the bar can be spotted through a tinted green window in a door. They seem to be arguing, and the camera draws in closer and closer to the door until their bickering can be heard.

Woman - I don't care what you think. I'm doing to do this, and that's final.

Man - But why? Think of the risks you'd be taking, dammit! It's pretty plain to see.

Well, maybe that's none of your business.

It is my business, because I don't want to see your life thrown away just like that because you can't let a dead issue go. I won't allow you to do it.

What if I won't allow you to stop me?

You don't have to. I'll find a way to do it.

The woman shakes her head and the man sighs.

You know all I want is for you to be safe. And by making yourself known to a man like him, you're letting go of everything that keeps you safe.

Well... You keep me safe, don't you?

I do. But... I can't stop him from doing what he wants to do.

Nor me. But... If it's any consolation... I'll let you know the minute anything goes wrong. I promise.

...Darkness...

That happened to be the last promise she ever made. And, a pathetic one. She lied. What were they talking about, you ask? Hard to know from what was said. They tried not to reference it too strongly in case anyone nearby could hear them. I know what it was, though. It was about a cruel man who had been blackmailing the woman's friend. The friend's ex-boyfriend, extorting money from her. Now, this woman wanted to do something about it. Not that she bothered to think about what she'd do. Do you think this was wise? Of course not! The man was already puppeteering the situation. He knew things about the friend that she didn't want anybody to know about. And out of pity, the woman decided to put herself in danger to help her friend get her life back. A sweet thought, but very stupid logic. I suppose that makes it illogical, really.

The woman waits on a park bench in the cold, very early morning. Alone, and without a jacket to keep her warm. A man comes along and takes a seat beside her, holding a newspaper.

Man #2 - A nice morning...

Cold... Is it you?

I would say so. I assume we're looking to talk to one another.

The man lets out a silent chuckle, then leans in to whisper to the woman.

If you want to talk, you'll follow. This is... Too public.

He gets up and begins to stroll out of the park. The woman follows, doing as he says. For now.

Oh, one thing I didn't mention... The girl had a drinking problem. A saaaad truth to many. And she only made this decision that night after being at the bar with her man. Hmmm, doesn't exactly sound like a coincidence.

The man leads her to a dark alley and lights a cigarette. One for himself, without offering one to her. He draws a lungful of smoke and blows it into the cold breeze.

Alright. So... What do you know? Better wording, what's she told you?

She only told me you're holding information against her to get money out of her. What a cheap trick to pull.

Eh, you call it cheap. I call it money.

You better leave her alone.

I don't know what the hell you think you can threaten me with. You don't know what you're getting yourself involved with. I have no problem killing someone. Hell, I'd kill her if she wasn't suck a great source of money to exploit.

I guess some people are truly messed up, beyone the point of return. They're the type you should always avoid. The risk's just too great. And if you can't avoid the confrontation?... A sober, clean mind would certainly help..... Never. Make a rash decision... Think, always think.

The woman strikes the man in the face with her elbow, causing him to drop his smoke. His nose bleeds. Blood drips onto the concrete, on her clothing and on his... But, before she knows it, her neck is pressed up between the man's forearm and a solid brick wall. A split second mistake left had her at a bad man's mercy. The man yells in the woman's face, but not a word can be understood. The man can be seen crushing down on her throat as the scene fades away to darkness.

Bad habits lead to bad situations.

The scene fades back to that very wall, where written in blood is....

Safety in sobriety
