I woke up with a start, holding the sheet to my chest and gasping. It had been the first time in 4 years since I had that nightmare and it…wasn’t something I wanted to relive. Looking to my side, I watched Michael as he slept soundly, his bare chest slowly rising and falling with each breath. My fingers lightly outlined the angry scar on his chest from when Zak stabbed him and for once, I was glad that my brother was in Hawaii at his resort with Azrael. He had betrayed me by trying to take my mate from him and I know exactly what he would have done if the roles were reversed. Zak would have tried to kill me…a lover for a lover. It was how we were raised, how our families had raised us. It wasn’t anything new to us, we had watched men and women die for the same thing and for even less.

Slowly, I got out of bed and pulled his shirt over my head, walking out to the balcony and taking a breath. Every time I closed my eyes, I could hear the sound of metal crunching into the hard ground, the shatter of glass and the screams of my ex and son. I remember waking up in the hospital, Zak sitting in the chair next to me and looking like he hadn’t slept in days. He was the one who told me Kain and Riley didn’t make it. He told me Riley had died at the scene but that he was sorry he couldn’t do anything else. That was the day he quit practicing medicine, the day he fell back into the drugs and alcohol.

Zak used to be one hell of a chest cutter, one of the best surgeons in the country but he was the one who was working on my son when he took his last breath. He told me that Kain had opened his eyes and looked at him, as if he knew he wouldn’t make it out of that room. It wasn’t but a month after that that he and Alexandra had lost the twins. When my brother had found out who caused it, no one could stop him. He ripped apart our uncle at the joints, covering the room with blood and not stopping until our uncle was a pile of meat at his feet. Those screams that came from Zak sent chills down the spine of everyone who heard them and after that, he fell into the pace of self-destruction, he moved out of his house and stayed in the streets, making drugs, alcohol and whores his only passions.

How I wish I could have fallen in his steps, that the roles were reversed in that one point in our lives. He went from the highest paid surgeon to this…monster; a vampire roaming the streets of London and Paris, killing without mercy and leaving bloody messes for the cops. I was stuck being the Head of the Family…the head of a cursed family, torn down the middle by blood, lust, greed and pride. I was forced to stand there and move forward, unable to mourn the loss of my family. Then it was the night Zak came home, the night he made me what I am now…well partly, Father made me this hybrid. The Vampire Hybrid Daughter of the Moon’s Goddess. It all came around in the end and I guess I felt as if I owned Zak something for giving me the life I had always wanted; the life away from the Family, allowing me to be where I am now.

I turned and looked in the bedroom, watching Michael sleep. The moon showering him in its silver light and reflecting slightly off his sweaty chest, the breeze picked up and he rolled over, pulling the blanket up to his shoulder. It took him a minute to realize that the spot next to him was empty before he sat up, looking around before looking outside.

“Micah.”

I smiled softly and walked over to him, cupping his face and kissing him softly.

“I’m alright baby. Go back to sleep.”

“You had another nightmare.”

“It was of my past. That’s all.”

Michael smiled softly and kissed my forehead, “You need sleep for tomorrow
since it’s clear that your tag team partner won’t be much help now, get back here.”

I yelped when he pulled me back into bed, making me laugh softly and snuggle into his chest. Everything in my past led me to this man, to this future and there is nothing in this world that would keep me from him.
