Nightmare is stood atop a cliff face looking out to sea. The cold air doesn’t affect him but tonight he isn’t himself for the first time he doesn’t feel strong, he doesn’t feel invincible. The fog rolls off the ocean and up the cliff face passing by him as he just stands stares and contemplates. He is contemplating what failure means or more importantly what his failure means.

Coming off the back of failing to reach his missions which would have been finally ridding the XWF of the tyrant king Madison he is feeling some emotions he thought never existed. He imagines these feelings to be similar to that of the subjects of his previous missions when they are confronted by him. This is not a feeling he enjoys but it is true, for the first time in his life as a night demon he has failed in the highest possible way of failing.

It is true a night demon is always prepared for every variable that may occur during every mission. You never know how your original plan may be received. Failures have happened before going back through the centuries but these failures are always quickly rectified with a slight change of mission statement. This change does not come from the powers, it is a change that if required must take place during the mission once a variable has manifested itself, this change is decided, planned and finally put into practice by the night demon. It has never been known that an amended mission has ever been failed until now.

Nightmares latest mission had been one of the biggest of his life, to rid the XWF of their King Madison. It was a difficult mission to achieve as Madison had struck fear into many and these beings had forced Nightmare to go through a round of stages to finally reach the end of his mission, to finally come face to face with King Madison. Nightmare had passed through these challenges with flying colors, well all but one.

The penultimate challenge saw Nightmare facing off in a chamber against numerous opponents attempting to get their hands on the King. The majority of these opponents were not a vital aspect to the mission. They did not affect the mission. However one of these beings caused and issue.

Luca Arzegotti was a member for the evil king Madison’s order. He was firmly on the king’s side and somehow he found his way into the penultimate chamber match. With this new information Nightmare had realized his mission had been truly affected in the highest manor. Without Luca’s presence in this match Nightmare new that if he did not get the job done on this night the King would still remain in danger of losing his crown to one of the other competitors that were baying for his blood. Now Luca was involved the goal post changed completely.

It would have been a disaster of the highest order if Nightmare failed his mission, and Luca had succeeded in reaching the goal of facing off against his friend and master. Nightmare could no longer trust the other competitors to get the job done. He had to succeed himself. If Luca would succeed he could simply lie down for his master, which would continue Madison’s reign of terror or even become king himself and reign just as the previous King Madison had.

This is what unfortunately happened, Nightmare couldn’t get the job done for the first time in his career he failed the mission and had condemned the XWF to much more fear and suffering. With this his motivation had been broken as he contemplated that his time as a Night Demon was coming to the end, was it time to pass the reigns over to his apprentice. Was it time for him to return to the Demon Castle and become an apprentice once again, the apprentice to the higher power.

Before Nightmare the current higher power was an active night demon. He had spotted Nightmare as a normal young man walking the earth just as we all do. Except Nightmare whose real name is unknown at this point did not live as most do. He was a greedy young man who would do all he could to achieve his goals, his goals were the same as many who act in life in a certain way, money. He had lost his way with ideas of grandeur and riches.

This is his story…

A Nightmare Story - Part 1

The child that would become Nightmare was born in San Francisco in 1960. It was believed that his parents were a young couple Jennifer Cameron and Samuel Kilbane, much too young to admit to their families or anyone else that they were expecting a child. They had been together for just a short time when the very young started showing and when the fear set in of what her family would do to her, the child growing inside her and to the love of her young life it was decided that they would run away until the baby was born as her father was a drunk, obnoxious man who would sooner push his own daughter down the stairs than have her taint the family name by bringing a child into the world whilst being under age and out of wedlock. There plan worked perfectly as they told their parents they were heading up to the construction site of Candlestick Park the home of the San Francisco giants who had just moved from their original home in New York City. The young lover’s parents would not see the couple again.

They did head to the construction site and stood and watched all the workmen slowly building up the stadium whilst they decided there next plan of action. They finally came to the agreement that they would stay at the house of Sam’s cousin Margaret. They could trust her as she could know what they were going though as she had suffered of a similar fate at a younger age and she would not let what happened to her at the hands of her father happen to Jenny.

Only a few days after moving into Margaret’s home Sam went to work on the docks to begin earning money to help Margaret with the late payments for her home and also for the future of his soon to be young family. Ships used to come in from all over the world carrying all kinds of things and the young Samuel would with the help of many other young men trying to earn some money for themselves unload the cargo and sort ready for the trucks to arrive and to take to their final destination. This wasn’t a glamorous job by all means and with only a modest wage the hours were long but money was money and every penny helped.

One day whilst at work Margaret had arrived at the docks out of breath with a message for Sam. Jenny was having the baby. Sam immediately dropped all he was doing and ran out of the docks with Margaret following close behind. He finally arrived at Margaret’s house just as Margaret’s friend who was a qualified nurse was handing the tiny child to his mother. Tears began to form in the corners of his eyes as he approached Jenny who looked over to him and smiled. “We have a little boy”.
Sam threw his arms around the love of his life and there new born child and sobbed with happiness as all thoughts of what had gone before disappeared out of his mind. He was happy. Finally.

Family life seemed to come easy for Sam and his young love Jenny. She would spend all day caring for their young child with the help Margaret who dotted on that child and Sam would head out to the docks for work to support them all. News quickly filtered down to them that both sets of their parents had been killed in some sort of accident whilst they had all been out searching for the young pair who had been missing for a good couple of years now. This news did hit the pair hard as they had never had the opportunity to say any goodbyes to their families and at the same time their families had not been able to see their grandson. Of course their happiness had diminished somewhat during this time but they supported each other with the strength of unconditional love and they managed to move on past this. One day while Sam was at work Jenny decided to take the young child to see the home where his mother had grown up. There was a new family living in the house now so Jenny didn’t hang around too much, only to try and explain to her now two year old that no matter what always be honest with your family and never turn your back on them as they did in the fear that their families would have turned their back on them because now Jenny would never know what might have been, she was too late.

Over the next few years Sam and Jenny and their child had moved out of Margaret’s house finding their own place and had set up a lovely home together. Sam had even proposed to Jenny and they were making their plans to marry on which would be on the day of their child’s fifth birthday...

On November the 17th 1964 Sam was ready to head out to work as he always did, he had kisses his wife to be goodbye as well as his year old son stroking him on the head and performing the coin behind the ear trick that his father had always used to do with him. He stepped out of the front door of their modest 2 bedroom house and headed down the street to work.

Sam loved walking the streets to work in the mornings, everywhere seemed so much more peaceful. He would take the same route every morning as he headed down to the docks, he would say hello to the same people with a big smile on his face just enjoying life with the thoughts of his family fluttering through his mind as a constant reminder that he did do good.

Sam arrived at the dock about 15 minutes prior to his shift where he would then stand with some of his colleagues. Smoke a cigarette and talk about the events of their previous evening. The previous nights conquest’s of a female variety was the most popular topic for these conversation as not all of these young men had the commitments and loving relationship that Sam had, but he didn’t care one bit, he didn’t feel he was missing out and he just stood back and laughed and joked with the rest of the group as the explained the finer details of every encounter.

The alarm sounded at 7am sharp and all the worked filtered inside the warehouse and began there long 12 hour shift. Sam headed out to the loading bay and began handballing boxes after boxes of cargo onto a back of a wagon, once complete he would shut the back door down, check it of the sheet and watch the wagon pull away only to be replaced almost immediately but another almost identical one. This was the story of Sam’s entire working day, yes it did get repetitive but he didn’t care, he was making the money to help support his family that was all that mattered.

12:35 pm about five hours into his shift the alarm sounded again which signaled it was time for a short break Sam stayed behind slightly to finish loading his wagon as the rest of the workers filtered out for their coffee and cigarettes. A few minutes later the Wagon had pulled away and Sam made his way out of the warehouse and into the break arena where he noticed one of his colleagues being surrounded by a group of men he did not recognize. Sam sat on the bench near the door and lit up a cigarette and just continued to look around. The next minute there was some shouting as the group of men had began to attack his colleague pushing him to the ground, kicking him repeatedly. Sam jumped to his feet and rushed upon the group of thugs in an attempt to assist his friend. He managed to fight off two of the group successfully and then went to work on the next two. Just as one of the guys was about to swing another boot into the side of his friends head Sam grabbed him tackling him to the floor where they scuffled around for some time. Sam finally got the better of his friend’s attacker almost straddling him and beating his fists into his face finally knocking him unconscious. Sam then looked over to see his friend on the floor unconscious with blood dripping out of his ear with the final attack stood over him laughing. Sam screamed “Son of a Bitch” as he rose to his feet lunging at the final attacker. As he just began to swing his first punch at the thug he felt a sharp pain in his chest. He had been stabbed. The attacker had noticed him coming and pulled out a knife and had driven it into Sam’s chest before quickly running out of the docks leaving Sam collapsed to the floor.

To be continued…
