There was something about New York City that irritated Cate, something about all the people and all the commerce, nobody ever stopped to appreciate anything. Yet, this was the closest to heaven you could get in the United States. The book of Siran said to be near to heaven. Cate took the instruction literally, Mt. Denali was her first choice, but she nearly froze to death somewhere around the 10K mark, so, the next best option was to ascend a tall building. The WTC was taller but the Empire State Building attracted her more.

Cate had a feeling about it, and that was how she did everything. If it felt right, she did it. The Book of Siran was helpful in deciphering her feelings, in fact she entirely depended on it.

More than anything, she wished she could consult it then. Even though the elevator was cramped, a number of people were staring at her and the book, it made her uneasy, but she couldn't decide what to do.

"What's that book?" A man asked, "I swear I've seen it before."

Characteristically, Cate said nothing. What could she say? She hadn't been told to speak. Instead she pressed the book closer to her chest.

"Come on, I asked you a question. It's rude to not answer like that."

Ding!

The elevator stopped and the mass flowed out to the next open elevator going up.

Cate shifted and swerved among the people, hoping to separate from the curious man. At least this was the last elevator to the top.

"Can I at least see the cover?"

Cate was sure she had lost him, but there he was behind her, though her back was against the car wall. Her heart sank into dread and she said nothing.

Suddenly her skin crawled as a surprisingly large spider crept along her shoulder. No, fingers, the man was walking his fingers across her skin. towards her book.

If the book had allowed her to, she would have screamed. Instead she silently pushed against the crowd until she reached the bank of number buttons.

"Just a peak." the man said, still right behind her and reaching for her book.

Cate pushed to the opposite corner but before she got halfway, a clinically obese man in a Michigan t-shirt obstructed her way.

In her thoughts, Cate remembered the words, excuse me. but said nothing.

"I only want to see your book, stop running." The man said, now suddenly between her and the elevator wall.

Ding!

Finally! Cate stepped on a toddler's feet and then his chest in her hurry out of the elevator into a gift shop? Confused, Cate sat on a stack of books titled When New York reached for the Sky, opening her book on her lap, with a hand firmly securing it over the crevice between pages and spine. Gripping the box of matches in her teeth, she struck a match and found the words of the book filling her mouth.

"In the first days of cooling season of the Desert Kingdom, the Black Empress desired her likeness be captured in sculpture and paid a large sum to her Kingdom's most skilled Sculptor.

In some years, the sculptor captured her likeness with precision and invited the Empress to decide if his work was worthy of the Imperial Gallery. Indeed the Black Empress was pleased with the portrait and gave the artist her highest praises.

However, when the Empress departed the sculptor, she bumped the pedestal holding the portrait, causing the stone bust to fall. The Sculptor, seeing this threw his body on the floor to save the portrait from destruction and broke his arm in the process.

The sculptor's arm never recovered and he never produced a work worthy of praise again."

Cate looked up upon finishing the story and waved the match out. A crowd had formed and listened to her read the wisdom of Siran, though strangely, the man asking about the book was not among of them.

Cate ignored the people as they discussed the story and decided that Siran was teaching her about devotion, the sculptor suffered the worst fate for the sake of his Empress.

Just as the sculptor sacrificed his ability for the Empress, so too would Cate for the Wisdom of Siran. Some time, Siran had instructed her to seek the heavens. She would obey.

Cate didn't know what floor she was on, but it was surely above street level. Silently, Cate began to elevate herself on the stack of books, she leapt in a crouched position and slid more books beneath herself until she could see the outside observation deck through the glass dome above the gift shop.

Now with her head brushing the ceiling Cate could now clearly see stairs from the gift shop to the observation deck and she leapt over the crowd discussing the story to the floor.

Finally outside, Cate looked around for new instructions but found none. Why had Siran sent her to the sky? Cate seated herself on the ground and opened her book for new instructions, but the fierce wind extinguished every wood match she struck.

Repeatedly, Cate struck match after match to no avail. Eventually, the little box was depleted and she busied herself to find a spare full box somewhere in her jacket.
So preoccupied with her search for fire and need for instruction, Cate noticed the Book of Siran was absent long after it had been snatched from her lap.

----------------------

The sun had set hours ago, Cate still sat on the floor of the observation deck, her leg had fallen asleep and the numbness crept over her body.

"Miss? We're locking up here, it's time to go."

"Tim! to! Go!" The security guard yelled and muttered, "God damn it."

He waved his hand in front of Cate's eyes, "Helloooo?"

Finally he walked off talking on his radio device, "Yeah Steve? I got some junkie stoned outta her mind up here, sent Dave up to help me out.
