Lt. John Morgan walked the streets of London in pure elation. Having fought in the World War, he felt a kind of pride that couldn’t be expressed. He had seen men die, seen many men injured, experienced the horrors of war himself. Today was a special day.

The War was over!

He couldn’t describe why he felt the need to turn to the streets that day, it was probably because everyone else did. But it felt special. As soon as Churchill had announced the war was over, the feeling of freedom overcame him.

He took to the streets because they could take to the streets. No longer would they fear buildings blowing up around them, no longer would he listen for the whistle of shells moving in his direction. This was what freedom felt like.

Morgan closed his eyes and took a deep breath in. It even smelled different.

As he opened his eyes, he struggled in seeing two young women being groped by much older, drunker men. His duty to his country wouldn’t end with the war, this wasn’t right and something needed to be done about this.

It happened quickly, a punch was thrown, a woman screamed and Lt. Morgan suddenly found himself with two new friends rushing out from the scene of a fight. The three burst into laughter as they moved away from the scene.

Happy VE Day

Morgan talked for the next ten minutes with the two women, offering to walk them home, or escort them through the crowds. He told them all about his experiences in the war, what led him to the Navy and why he felt today was so important. There was something about the one, that just looked so familiar.

As the group walked past a restaurant, they heard Glenn Miller playing in the background. Morgan knew what to do when he had two pretty ladies in his company

Can I have this dance?

He grabbed one of them and swung her gently. She didn’t seem to know how to dance. He smiled as she looked at him awkwardly.

Come on, just look at my feet

After a few uncomfortable seconds, she got the hang of it. The two were dancing. A smile formed across her face. It was one of the prettiest things he’d ever seen. He took his shot, leaned in, and kissed her. She looked shocked for a second, and then a small smile crossed her face, until her cousin pulled her away into the crowd.

He would always wonder what had happened to the girl he kissed on VE day, sometimes thinking of that moment. Until he saw her on TV at her coronation years later.

Neville sat on the plane waiting for his trip back to America. He felt tired. Coming back from injury, winning back the title, and then competing at WarGames had tired him out. He started to doubt why he did any of this. He could have a career in whatever he wanted, did he really want this life?

Thoughts came on his opponent this week. The one who very clearly couldn’t give two shits about anyone around her. The one who simply did things to forward her own name. This pissed Neville off. Even though Neville was seen as one of the cockiest bastards to have ever stepped into a wrestling ring, but he still knew the value of those who kept him in the position of power he was in. He knew you always had to give credit and value to whoever stepped in a wrestling ring with you. Too often had he seen the underdog win, and knew that was Jenny’s weakness in this match. She was underprepared and overconfident.

In many ways Neville always thought himself as the underdog in any match. He surely wasn’t the strongest superstar in the XWF. He wasn’t the fittest either. He probably didn’t have the best charisma. And there was no way he had the background of some of these guys. But he knew what he had and he knew what to do with it.

Mr Sinclair?

Neville looked over to see a young boy looking up at him. He took his earphones out and stared at the kid.

I’m a big fan

In this moment, Neville knew he had to make a choice. Was Neville going to be the cocky bastard who is willing to tell off anyone willing to invade his privacy. Or would Neville show mercy to the kid, and allow him the privilege of meeting someone he admired.

You know what, let’s take a picture.

The kid held up a cell phone and Neville snapped a selfie with it. He wouldn’t tell the kid, but he admired his balls to talk to him, and sometimes when you put yourself out there, you deserve the reward coming to you.

The kid sat happily back in his seat. Neville took out his phone and decided to film a few words to Jenny Myst before trying to get to sleep on his flight.

Jenny, I know it’s late, but I can’t sleep possibly thinking this might be my last night as the TV Champion. Maybe it’s the history of what has just happened between you and I. Maybe it’s the fact that I find myself caring more than ever. Maybe it’s that I don’t want things to change right now. Either way, I think I really need to teach you a thing or two about what it’s meant for me to be the TV Champion.

I know you’re not good at listening Jenny. Most things you parrot back at me, you use for your own purposes, but this belt has meant something to me, so if you’ll shut up, listen to me and understand why I fight for my life every time this belt is on the line. You might actually learn something.

Lesson #1 – The TV Championship deserves to be great again

I’m really disturbed with how many people consider the TV Title a stepping stone to something greater. Maybe it’s the way it’s set up. Maybe because so many people have used it to get to an ultimate end goal. Maybe because people go on to greater things. But one of my goals as the TV Champion has been to restore the belt to where I know it can be.

If you’re going to hold the TV Title, make sure you’re an unmovable speedbump. Someone that stops people who are moving too fast, and slows even the best down. Don’t let people push you off the belt. Cling to it. Put effort into retaining it. Study your opponents.

Let’s look at the difference between the TV Title and the Hart Title right now. The TV Title headlines shows. We push each other, fans love us. The Hart title gets defended every now and then and doesn’t really have the same weight. To anyone who’s ever fought me for the Title, you may have lost, but we did it. The TV Title matters and I wonder what would happen to it if we hand it over to Jenny Myst.

I mean I know I’ve harped on the fact that she has another title, and I know she’s called out the fact that she’s defended it. But I fear that no matter what happens, the TV Title will always be the secondary title to Ms. Myst. She wants it because she can’t have it, not because she has any plans for what she wants to do with it.
And maybe that’s why I feel something. Maybe that’s why I can’t sleep on my flight and find myself thinking and worrying about the match tomorrow.

Maybe I care too much

Neville catches himself getting worked up. He has lots of room in the first class he’s flying in, but as he raises his voice people start to stare. He doesn’t want to make a scene.

Lesson #2 – The TV Championship deserves a Fighting Champion

One of the things I’ve loved most is being able to fight quality opponents as the Champion. It’s been amazing to be able to take on people and improve my game as I’ve done so. People expected nothing from me my first time fighting for the championship. It was fantastic to take the title, and amazing to see people’s reactions to me, the newcomer, taking it.

But then the real work came in. It wasn’t enough to simply fight every week, I had to start carving out my own name here. I fought, a lot, and made sure I won as many times as I could. I may have not fought the biggest names in the XWF, but I set myself apart from them. People didn’t know how good I was, but they knew who I was better than.

And I think that’s been where I’m at now. People don’t know how good I am, and maybe I need to go prove myself outside of this title picture. But I won’t sit down and simply let you win this match, Jenny. It’s not about winning the championship for me this week, it’s about proving to the XWF how good I am by destroying the person they all want to beat. People hate you, and I’m lucky enough to take you to task for what you’ve done.

But the reason I would struggle with you being the TV Title Champ is that I don’t see you as a fighting champion. You seem to be in things for yourself, you seem to care more about diplomacy with other wrestlers than fighting for what this federation needs. You fuck around with people who don’t show any respect to the title, and get involved in affairs you don’t need to get involved in.

The TV Title does not need a lot of drama to come with it. It needs people to step up and fight for it. Do you really think you’re the person to do that Jenny?

A flight attendant comes by Neville and offers him a drink.

Do you have any Scotch?

The attendant offers him some Crown Royal, it was all he could get, so he just needed to calm some nerves. After quickly pounding back the first, he orders two more.

Lesson #3 – You have to grow every day as a Champion

The biggest concern I have with Jenny Myst is that she doesn’t seem like she wants to grow. Everything about her extols her own virtue and seems to point to the fact that she already thinks she is the shit.

The thing that I learned most as a champion is that you constantly have to change yourself to adapt to every person you face. You see Jenny, the biggest thing you’ve gotten wrong in all your call-outs of me, is that you think my plethora of opponents somehow hasn’t set me up for greatness. But I’ve learned from each and every match I’ve ever been in. I’ve adapted myself, made sure any weaknesses I have are tidied up, and I grow with each match.

But Jenny never grows. She claims that she doesn’t want to be treated like a girl, yet all her points use her own femininity like a crutch. She claims that she might even like people, yet turns on them the moment she has a chance to move herself forward. She still calls herself a bitch, even though she hates it when others call her the same thing. Jenny is always the same, even in her own title defense, she never changes.

Jenny claims that she’s cleared out her competition, that’s the reason why people can’t fight her for her title. That’s the reason why she wants a new title. But in any other realm, fighting the same person numerous times creates tension, and fans get into it. But with Jenny, it creates boredom, because it’s literally the same thing from her time and time again. The reason the division is “cleared out” is because the XWF can’t risk seeing the exact same match week after week. It’s ridiculous.

So Jenny, are you ready to fight for this title? Ask yourself a few questions, will you make this championship great by holding it? Will you be a fighting champion? Will you actually try to change and grow as a champion? If so, maybe you’re the one to finally take this title for me for the long term. And I’ll gladly sit back and watch what you do with it.

But I don’t think you’re ready, and I sure as hell don’t think the XWF needs you as the TV Title holder right now. I’m not backing down tomorrow night.
