The Preamble

We fall, we list,
In history twist.
The camera leads the pen,
Leads the sword,
Engorge the mind,
Distort the hoard.

When silence falls,
A dull truth reigns.
In dark recess,
From the gold of conquest,
No empire gleams.

From the past,
Try to glean,
The stories I tell,
And what they mean.

Let it be known that history is wrought with tales of mysterious stray dogs.

We begin with Kasper Hauser; the boy who appeared, smartly dressed, from nowhere as a teen, claiming that he’d been brought up in a dark room with no idea who his captor was. He clutched with him a letter claiming he should become a cavalryman, ‘like his father’ yet he had no idea of the outside world. Thus began his celebrity as the mystery child.

The poor boy eventually died of a stab wound, possibly self inflicted, after living a short life as a recluse and then an object of public intrigue. We will never know his real identity.

Or, how about the case of Elisabeth Canning. The poor, autistic girl who never stepped outside her home unless it was to do chores, and who never wanted more. Never had the natural urge to chase boys or go out into the world. And yet, she suddenly disappeared. She would reappear days later, claiming to have been held captive by a ‘community’ inside a house, to be ‘used’. The girl had bloody hands, she claimed to have escaped by smashing a window.

And yet, when the town searched for her captors, this house which she remembered in such crisp detail...did not exist. The truth behind her ordeal will never be known.

Sometimes, life just leaves you wondering, what the fuck really happened? And nine times out of ten, you will never ‘fucking’ know, and besides, watch your language for fuck’s sake.

History’s mysteries will stand the test of time, and in an ironic way, they’ll stand there longer than any leader, champion, sportsman or whoever else you care to mention. Facts, nay, history, can be twisted and lose its power. A mystery may evolve over the years and take on almost supernatural elements as lies contort the facts...but the central power of intrigue remains powerful as ever.

Hauser. Canning. Mysteries that will never reveal themselves. Lost in time forever like the man in the iron mask.

But mysteries can be more than just objects of intrigue. Mysteries can evolve into myths. And cities, nay, empires may be begat on the back of myths.

Rome. The Roman Empire. Built with the underpinning myth of two children – Romulus and Remus. Both of royal stock, brought up feral in the wild by a wolf. Because of their ‘Royal’ blood, they develop leadership skills, and they eventually decide to create a city. But they argue about where it belongs, and so it passes that they fight each other, ending with Remus being killed. Romulus goes on to form Rome. And from Rome springs the Roman empire, and an end to monarchy.

But what, you ask, does any of this have to do with Neonero? This is merely the preamble, impatient reader. Patience is a virtue.
And to Hell with the virtuous

It’s a story of two moments, exit stage and enter stage. In the first, we see the exit...or do we?

Quote: The restraints release and a temporarily paralyzed Neonero falls in a heap to the mat. Neonero is seen moving his head around but unable to speak or move anything else.

PH: “Screw the music! Jeff Hardy, get the hell out here!”
..

Hardy gets out of the ring and grabs a ladder from ringside and slides it into the ring. He sets up the ladder and begins to climb but stops.

PH: “Jeff, I know you. I know you don’t want it to happen like this! However, it is going to. It has to. You’ll be defending it next week now c’mon! Get up there and grab that belt!”

Hardy hesitates, then continues his climb. Slowly. Toward the top of the ladder. He reaches the top and begins reaching for the title and then stops.

PH: “C’mon! GRAB THAT FUCKING BELT!”

Even though it goes against everything he stands for, Jeff reluctantly retrieves the European title, then drops to the mat!

In the first: Neonero is incapacitated. Supposedly by a shadowy figure named DU’s orders. ‘DU’ is not a figure who’s become known since. Simply a name thrown out as Heyman had a paralysed Neonero placed in the ring in some contraption of restraint. Jeff Hardy climbs the ladder, a helpless Neonero watches on.

Neonero was paralysed by someone none of us have ever heard of, whose name means simply ‘you’ in German. Is this some eldritch ploy from Heyman, to take an almost imperceptible swipe at his own audience? Is he really that smart, or is there something else in this equation that we’re missing...

We move to the second. Perhaps answers lie here.

Quote: CHAD LEWIS: “IT’S…. IT’S… NEONERO!!”

Neonero emerges from under the ring with a duffle bag in hand. He walks over to the timekeepers table and grabs the European title and slides into the ring. Neonero drops the duffle bag as he moves in behind Hardy and…

SMACK!

Neonero just laid out Hardy with the title!

Heyman looks on in utter shock! Neonero slowly makes his way over to J.P. Corino who still lays in the ring barely conscious. Nero kneels down and slaps Corino a few times bringing him to. Nero helps Corino to his feet and….

SIT OUT PACKAGE PILEDRIVER on Corino!!!

CHAD LEWIS: “Who’s side is he ON!?”

Nero slides Hardy over and lays him across Corino…

Then sets his sights on Paul Heyman…

Heyman begs and pleads…

Neonero grabs Heyman by the collar and tosses him to he mat near Corino and Hardy.

PH: “NO! NO! I WON’T DO IT!”

Nero begins slapping and punching Heyman. Heyman reluctantly makes the count.

1...

2...

Nero grabs Heyman by the hair…

PH: “AHHHHH! AHHH! ALRIGHT! ALRIGHT!”

3!

Neonero grabs Heyman by the throat and without saying a word just shoves the title hard into Heymans face and point at a sign in the rafters for GAUNTLET CITY.

So let’s get this straight; Neonero makes his return, attacking both Hardy and Corino, and yet he deliberately has Hardy win the match. A normal mind would take out Hardy, and have Corino win. Take the only thing in the world that gives Hardy a shred of validity and leave him an emaciated mess, instant revenge.

But instead, he gave Hardy another worthless win. Why? Does he want to right the wrong he was subjected to a month ago? Does he really just not give a shit about Corino? What’s with there being two belts? Mystery upon mystery. But these aren’t the biggest mystery. The biggest mystery lies within the interim.

Just what happened in the month-plus Neonero was absent? The question dominates the preamble; will answers be forthcoming? Perhaps. But then again, what fun is there to be found in killing intrigue?

Suddenly, a familiar face dominates the screen. Neonero stares into the lens of the camera, his piercing cyan hued eyes giving no clues whatsoever, and his face locked resolutely into one of blank yet studious complexion. He waves two fingers to the side, and the scene cuts.

We fade in contemplation. REALNESS TO COME.
