Random writing tip of the day: when to use its instead of it's

The previous owner used to sometimes mention this, so I thought I'd continue it. One of the most common mistakes in writing is the unneeded apostrophe in the possessive form of the word its. You ONLY need the apostrophe if you're abbreviating "it is" - thus becoming it's.

You do NOT need the apostrophe if you are referring to something BELONGING to another object. If you are going to talk about a microwave's power cord missing, you would say... The microwave is missing its cord.

This is something I used to always do wrong many years back and once I learned it, I started noticing how many others make the same mistake. By no means is it a big deal, but rather a nice little tidbit I think some of you will find helpful if you didn't already know. Smile

Another good one: who's or whose

whose = ownership of something, so you might say "I want to meet somebody whose ass is nice."

who's = abbreviation of "who is" so you might say "I want to meet somebody who's sexy."

I believe that same rule might apply to names as well, right? (in reference to the apostrophe)

For instance:

"Tony's in the match" does not mean the same thing as "Tony is in the match."

I see that type of thing being written a lot.

I believe it's fine with names and apostrophe should be used when it's a person/name, regardless of if you are trying to say he IS or that something is his belonging.

I have seen a common issue come up recently. Tony will win the match versus Madison will remain king. The first is correct, while the second was proved incorrect by my lovely 2nd grade teacher, Ms. Devine, long ago.

Oh, and another thing that I see get confused a bit.

There - marks distance, opposite of here.

Their - Possessive, it belongs to them.

They're (I sometimes pronounce this as they-er, for some reason) - contraction of they are.

Then, than... bugs me... but still sometimes bites me. Than is used as a comparison, as in Shane is better than John Madison.

The time to leave out the apostrophe would be if we're talking about multiple Tonys. "All those Tonys are wearing HBK shirts!"

Never use an apostrophe for plural.

where, were, wear, we're.

I have so many more that bug me.

People who do this:

"Here we go." They said.

Instead of:

"Here we go," they said.
