For those that live in more populated areas, the idea of nature itself can sometimes come off an something of an enigma. Even now, as David overlooked the cliff somewhere behind his abandoned abode, he had to marvel at how beautiful the natural world could be. With a small brook to his left running off into a waterfall into the shallow valley below, he couldn't deny that there was something unimaginable about the forest. It hid such lovely things, but also deadly secrets. Somewhere in the branches wandered a horror behind human means of understanding. A walking madness, leaving tracks in the soft soil, spreading roots of perdition. But there were only a select few who did understand. And he couldn't quite really understand all that, anyway. What had his life been up to that moment in time where he lost his mind? It was lost to him; tattered up like a family quilt with holes in all his favourite places. Little moments of importance swam past him in the brook, and he just wasn't sitting close enough to grab them.

He held the letter before him, examining the front. It read simply, "Mystica." A note to him. The edges were worn from frequent attention, as they had caught on the edges of his white woolen jacket's pockets as he removed the letter time and time again. He had read it, re-read it, and even tried to examine the handwriting for the added enjoyment of investigation and mental stimulation, but he'd found his usual memory session oddly lacking in this capability. He had noted himself to look into this science at a later date.

With letter in hand, he glanced out over the landscape before him. With eyes closed, he journeyed back to the breeze outside the spillway back in the city. There, on the overpass, with his eyes closed, he listened and felt for a rare occasion. The wind across his face, blowing his hair back in the air, he felt a moment of being alive. If only for a moment.

Opening his eyes, David sighed, enjoying this fleeting feeling of a connection with the outside world. Somewhere outside of himself. Perhaps he was being too sentimental, but he reminded himself repeatedly that a friend had personally written the note. The very idea of being appreciated sent him into a euphoria -- drunk on the sense of belonging.

From several meters behind him, Mystica gave a loud grumble, trying to break David clean of his delusions. Giving another satisfied sigh, David opened his eyes and spoke with a gentle smile to the sun.

"Yes?"

Mystica shifted, moving to a standing position. In this way, he had some semblance of power over David, if only for the inconsequential height advantage he gained by standing instead of sitting. With arms crossed, he gave a sneer.

"So what exactly is your plan?"

"Ooh, you said that wrong," David chuckled, a hot feeling flowing through his stomach. "At least let me enjoy this."

"Enjoy it all you want," Mystica replied in a harsh tone, beginning to pace like a caged lion. "But know that this is temporary. If you decide to go."

David glanced over his shoulder, surprised by Mystica's words.

"You're offering me the opportunity to choose?" David asked sarcastically. "How noble of you."

Mystica grumbled and kicked at the loose rocks beneath his feet, sending one or two tumbling down the valley walls into the abyss beyond -- disappearing into the dark shadow of the sun.

"Don't get used to it. Just keep my words clear."

David rolled his eyes and almost recited the rules in a bored tone.

"No alliances, no affiliations, no emotional distractions. Goodness, you're dull."

Mystica paused in his pacing, nodding along with each thing David listed off. He was playing the adult this time, with David becoming the hyped-up child Mystica needed to look after.

"Vulnerability will get us killed," Mystica advised with a stern look. David could only shake his head at this notion.

"You just don't understand empathy...are you a sociopath?"

"You mean, are WE a sociopath?" Mystica corrected, leaning forward to emphasize his words. "Possibly."

He smirked devilishly and went back into a more neutral pose, his arms crossing across his chest. A defense mechanism. Something to make him feel guarded against anything David or anyone else could fire back. Vulnerability.

David grew more concerned. His face sank like a boat in the ocean, sending out the wrinkles across his forehead, drenched in the perspiration of the hot afternoon. But then, his face turned, and something new grew across the wrinkles. It was a look of detemination and utter defiance. With a pomp in his movements, he stood, slamming his heel into the ground for emphasis.

"I'm going."

"Our funeral'.
